There is already a Mr. October.

But there might be room for a Mr. September.

If there can be such a nickname, Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre is laying claim to it. Beltre had two more extra-base hits, including his 29th home run, in the Rangers' 7-6 win over Kansas City on Wednesday. Over the last two Septembers, Beltre leads the majors in home runs (16), extra-base hits (23) and RBI (35).

Beltre had a three-run homer in the first inning Wednesday to get the Rangers on the board. In the eighth, he led off with a triple, then scored the Rangers' final run, which ended up being quite important, on a single.

He has hit in all five games in September, compiling a .381 average (8-for-21). He was 4-for-5 on Aug. 31. Beltre hit .374 with 12 home runs and 29 RBI and was named the AL Player of the Month. This year he's playing his way into the thick of the AL MVP debate.

"Who knows what it is?" Beltre said. "But I've always hit better in the second half. In the past, I had such horrible first halves that it was easy to do. Now, I've been having some OK first halves. But the atmosphere, the last three or four weeks, the race, it could all play a part."

Said manager Ron Washington: "This is the best I've seen him. He is just not missing his pitch."
