That's the word according to Buster Olney's article on ESPN.com posted Sunday night. Olney quoted sources who said several teams, including the Rangers, were interested in the veteran, who was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Friday. Here's part of the article: The Rangers recently cut loose pitcher Vicente Padilla and have been looking for a veteran pitcher for weeks -- they had talks with the Blue Jays about Roy Halladay, for example. But Texas might be hard-pressed to make a deal with Boston, considering the Rangers have been chasing the Red Sox in the wild-card race. Smoltz struggled this season. But the 42-year-old would certainly give the club some more starting pitching depth. And he has postseason experience, something that couldn't hurt to have in the clubhouse during a stretch run.
