In a smaller move that may pay surprising dividends the Rangers signed pitcher Seth McClung to a one year deal. McClung who is a big 6′6″ righty will compete for the final spot in the rotation in spring training.
McClung, 30, last pitched in the majors for the Brewers in 2009. He pitched to a 4.94 ERA, posting 5.8 k/9 and 5.7 BB/9. Not too impressive, and sadly those stats are fairly consistent with his career numbers. Fortunately for the Rangers, they will only pay him 700k if he makes the major league roster with an additional 700k in incentives.
Although this is the not answer for the team’s lack of an ace, McClung may be valuable as a spot starter or in case of injury. Look for the Rangers to make another big splash, most likely via trade. I’ll be posting an article on possible options (pure speculation) for the rotation in a few hours. Be sure to check it out.
