The Philadelphia Phillies announced Sunday that they acquired infielder Michael Young from the Texas Rangers for right-handed relief pitcher Josh Lindblom and minor league righty Lisalberto Bonilla. Young, who wants to play more regularly, dropped his no-trade clause to go to Philadelphia. The Phillies will pay $6 million of Young's $16 million salary for next year. Young also gets a $1.2 million bonus for waiving his no-trade clause. Young, 36, spent the first 12 years of his career with the Rangers. His role with Texas would have decreased next season after he struggled to a .277 batting average this year, his lowest in 10 years. He also had career lows with eight home runs and a .682 OPS. He was the Rangers' designated hitter in 2012 but also played parts of 86 games at all four infield positions. Young, a career .301 hitter with 984 RBI, is third all-time for the Rangers in both categories. He is the franchise's all-time leader in hits (2,230), games played (1,823), at-bats (7,399), runs (1,085), singles (1,583), doubles (415), triples (55), total bases (3,286), multi-hit games (651), strikeouts (1,152) and sacrifice flies (70). He also had six seasons with at least 200 hits.
