NEW YORK -- David Price outpitched fellow ace CC Sabathia and the Tampa Bay Rays' shuffled lineup produced enough offense to top the New York Yankees, 7-3, Thursday night. The victory helped the Rays avoid a sweep and move back into a first-place tie with the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East, a half-game ahead of the Yankees. The loss snapped the Yankees' three-game winning streak as they prepared to host the Mets in the first round of the annual Subway Series battle. Price allowed just one run on three hits in five innings, but threw 109 pitches, including 38 in the fifth, when he wiggled out of trouble with the bases loaded and one out. He struck out eight, three times getting Curtis Granderson, who struck out four times on the night. Jose Lobaton and B.J. Upton each had two hits with a run scored and an RBI, while Drew Sutton had a pair of doubles, including a key two-run hit in the fourth. Ben Zobrist responded to a lineup switch with an RBI single and a walk. ...

StubHub blamed for Yankees ticket woes

Attendance at New York Yankees games is down 3.6% this season, and the team's president believes it has to do with "serious issues" with the secondary market retailer.

Yankees' Rivera sets date for surgery

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera said the blood clot in his right calf has cleared up and he will have surgery on his injured knee on Tuesday. Baseball's career saves leader was at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday before New York's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, walking without a limp despite having a torn ACL and damaged meniscus. He says he should be ready to play at the beginning...

Chamberlain nearing game action

Joba Chamberlain could soon pitch in a minor league game for the first time since injuring an ankle during spring training. The New York Yankees reliever said he is scheduled to throw in a simulated game on Friday. Chamberlain threw a pair of 20-pitch segments Monday during his third batting practice session at the team's minor league complex. ''Especially after today...

Former Owl Marty Gantt Drafted by Tampa Bay

From the CPL For all the players selected in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft, there are just as many unique stories as to how they got there. For Marty Gantt, that road has certainly been a winding one, starting out at the very beginning. Gantt was born without a fully developed right hand, which leaves unable to properly grip a bat as he swings left-handed...

Bottom of the Ninth: New York, New York

New York Yankees: On Friday, Jon Heyman reported that Rafael Soriano will remain the closer, even after David Robertson returns from his oblique injury in a week or two. I was a little harsh in my assessment of Soriano two weeks ago, as his May K/BB was a solid 3.67, vastly superior to his awful 1.17 ratio in April. Soriano is both throwing more strikes and getting more swinging...

Yankees 4, Rays 1

NEW YORK -- Inning by inning, New York Yankees starter Ivan Nova looked less like the pitcher who had been roughed up for most of the season and more like the 16-game winner he was last year. With each new scoreless inning, Nova also made Tampa Bay Rays starter Alex Cobb's own impressive outing look as though it would end in vain, which it did in the Yankees' 4-1 win Wednesday...

Yankees 9, Mets 1

NEW YORK -- Only a few innings in, the question for Johan Santana became not how many hits he would give up, but how many home runs. Robinson Cano homered twice, and combined with Nick Swisher and Andruw Jones for three straight homers in the third inning as the New York Yankees thrashed Santana and the New York Mets, 9-1, Friday night at Yankee Stadium. To further humble Santana...

Subway Series Preview

The first Subway Series game is tonight. Tonight the Mets are in the Bronx to open up the first of six Subway Series games this season. To preview the series, I talked to Rob Abruzzese from Bronx Baseball Daily. Overall, with both teams being over .500, there seems to be an added level of excitement heading into this weekend. Me: The Yankees seem to be heating up lately. Who have...

Rays-Marlins Preview

The Miami Marlins are struggling offensively, and it may be tough to snap out of a slump against Jeremy Hellickson and the Tampa Bay Rays. The Marlins attempt to snap their four-game losing streak to the visiting Rays on Friday night, when they face Hellickson for the first time in the opener of a three-game Citrus Series. Miami (31-26) batted .172 average and got outscored 21...

Yankees Jump All Over Johan In Mets 9-1 Loss

In his first start since the no-hitter a week ago, Santana, on six days rest, gets slammed by the Yankees. He makes it only five innings allowing seven runs (six earned), on seven hits including a career-tieing four homeruns. Two homers being from Robinson Cano, and three straight homeruns in third in the bandbox known as Yankee Stadium. It was the extra days off that ailed him...
