ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Rookie Chris Archer beat the New York Yankees for the third time, Evan Longoria hit one of four homers off Hiroki Kuroda and the Tampa Bay Rays topped their AL East rivals 7-2 on Friday night.
Jose Lobaton homered and drove in four runs in support of Archer (7-5), a 24-year-old right-hander who won twice earlier this season at Yankee Stadium, including a two-hit shutout on July 27. He gave up four hits over seven innings this time.
Matt Joyce and Ben Zobrist also went deep for Tampa Bay, hitting solo shots off Kuroda (11-9), who tied a career high for homers allowed -- the first given up by the Yankees starter in nearly two months.
The loss stopped a five-game winning streak for New York, which had won 10 of 12 to climb back into the AL playoff race.
Archer, who also won in New York on June 23, yielded a run-scoring single to Alfonso Soriano in the first inning and Brett Gardner's triple and Robinson Cano's RBI grounder in the sixth. In three...

A-Rod Grocery is changing its name.
The grocery store was changed from Pena Grocery to A-Rod Grocery thirteen years ago while the third baseman was still playing with the Seattle Mariners.
Rodriguez eventually came to join the Yankees and patrons at the store soon believed that Rodriguez may even had a owners stake in the place.
Instead the store is owned by 41-year...

New York Yankees 2 — Tampa Bay Rays 7
A rare bad start by Hiroki Kuroda in tonight’s 7-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Yankees got behind the speed of Brett Gardner for the offense tonight. He would start the game with a walk and would steal second base...
Even before New York Yankees' outfielder Ichiro Suzuki reached on a single on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, discussions began about what that hit would do for the Japanese sensation's chances of enshrinement into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. The hit itself was nothing significant, but he did it in classic Ichiro fashion: a single (off Toronto's R.A. Dickey...
When we last left the Alex Rodriguez circus, we learned that Rodriguez was willing to accept an 80-100 game suspension, and then retire when his suspension was served. All because Rodriguez wants most, if not all the money remaining on his Yankees contract.
Since then Rodriguez has vowed to refrain from discussing all non-baseball matters. But that hasn’t stopped those close to...
Struggling New York Yankees ace Hiroki Kuroda surrendered seven runs over six innings in a 7-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night. Managing to keep the ball in the park since June 30, the 38-year-old Kuroda (11-9, 2.71 ERA) yielded four homers to Tampa Bay. Now owning only the fourth smallest ERA amongst American League starters, the Japanese sensation is no longer a legitimate...
Derek Jeter was dealing with plenty of emotions as he prepared for his latest return to the New York Yankees' lineup.
"Excited, looking forward to it, anxious, happy," Jeter said. "What else could you have?"
Jeter was activated off the disabled list before New York's game Monday at Toronto, starting at shortstop and batting second against the Blue Jays...
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- The Tampa Bay Rays have unveiled a sand sculpture to honor Mariano Rivera on the New York Yankees closer's last regular-season visit to Tropicana Field.
Rivera smiled and joked that he was taking the sculpture home when he saw it before Friday night's game. He signed the sculpture right under the words "ENTER SANDMAN 42."
Alex Rodriguez is hoping for the best possible outcome in his appeal of a 211-game suspension for performance-enhancing drug use. He has hired an All-Star team of lawyers than includes top New York criminal defense attorney Joe Tacopina. Since Tacopina came on board, A-Rod’s situation has become about far more than his alleged involvement with […]

Toronto Blue Jays 3 — New York Yankees 5
The sweep is completed by taking advantage of mistakes in today’s 5-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Yankees and Blue Jays were scoreless through the first four innings. Ichiro did start the fourth inning with a double...
Yankee fans should breathe a heavy sigh of relief that Brett Gardner's hand is not broken. On Saturday, the Yankees sent Gardner for precautionary X-Rays after the center fielder took a pitch off the hand in the third inning of Friday night's loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. Gardner finished the game, but the Yankees -- in light of their myriad of injuries this year -- wanted...
When it comes to gifts, sometimes it’s the thought that counts. The Tampa Bay Rays will definitely be heeding that motto after their effort to honor New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera totally flopped. The Rays presented the sand sculpture seen above to Rivera on Friday ahead of the three-game series between the teams, which […]
The New York Yankees’ outfielder, Ichiro Suzuki, reaches an amazing plateau last night.
With a single to left field, Ichiro had his 4,000th hit of his professional career. That’s a number that has only been accomplished in Major League Baseball by two individuals, Pete Rose and Ty Cobb. The problem is, Ichiro did not reach that level in the big leagues.
The 4,000 hits of...
There was Evan Longoria turning a double play that went around the horn Yunel Escobar making big plays up the middle same with Ben Zobrist.
Saturday night belonged to the defense and of course the pitching.
But especially the defense.
At one point Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon turned to bench coach Davey Martinez and said the Rays had to beat the Yankees because of how well...
Mike Francesa handles a Derek Jeter call with 'how many short stops you know with 3,000 hits?'

Simply focused on trying to beat the New York Yankees, the Tampa Bay Rays won't let the presence of Alex Rodriguez be a distraction during this key weekend series.
The Rays try to prevent the visiting Yankees from matching a season high with their sixth consecutive victory Friday night.
Though Rodriguez won't answer any non-baseball related questions, each city New York...
