The Tampa Bay Rays have claimed first place in the division after they defeated the New York Yankees Friday night and the Boston Red Sox lost to the Baltimore Orioles. Manager Joe Maddon said the following after acknowledging they were in first place, via the Tampa Bay Times. It’s always good to validate what you had been doing. You get to that particular point, and you’re there, and you want to stay there. There’s no question. Now it’s up to us. We have to continue to play the game properly. And continue they must. The Rays have a 17-3 record in the month of July and five more games to surpass their record win total in July of 19 wins. A big contributor to the team’s success is rookie Will Myers, who is continuing to play good baseball. With a 2-for-5 performance against CC Sabathia and the Yankees, Myers has had eight straight multi-hit games which makes him the first American League rookie since 1934 to do that. He is batting .322 with five home runs for the Rays this season. Tampa Bay will look to continue their streak of good baseball Saturday when the send pitcher Chris Archer to the mound Saturday.
