Here at the corporate headquarters for hardballchat.com, we have eyes and ears everywhere. This evening one of our crack researchers forwarded me one of the worst articles I believe I’ve read in a very long time. A writer using the handle, Extra Pine Tar at opposingviews.com must have plenty of free time on his (or her) hands because they wasted a few minutes behind the keyboard to compose a typical Bostonian, hate-filled piece outlining all the ways he hates, yes, hates, Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon. In typical, LeBron James beer pouring fashion, Pine Tar kept it classy as only Boston fans can. If you want to waste five minutes of your life, you can read the piece here. The article was spawned by the scrum which occurred in the last series between the Rays and Boston Red Sox. Boston intentionally threw at Rays DH Luke Scott Saturday night and after the game, Joe Maddon called Boston and manager Bobby Valentine out. This didn’t sit well with Pine Tar. Too freaking ...

Rays players sing Usher's 'Nice & Slow'

Now baby tell what you wanna do with me? Tampa Bay Rays players Elliot Johnson and BJ Upton showed the ladies what’s up with their pitchy rendition of Usher’s “Nice and Slow” at Thursdays conclusion of the Rays on the Runway fundraiser. This classic R&B performance sent the fans at the annual fashion show charity event into uproar of excitement. Also make sure to...

Longoria ready for rehab assignment

Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria is ready to start a minor league rehabilitation assignment. Rays manager Joe Maddon said on Thursday that Longoria, who has been on the 15-day disabled list with a partially torn left hamstring since May 1, will be the designated hitter for Triple-A Durham on Saturday. The three-time All-Star was hitting .329 with four homers and 19 RBIs in...

Rays' Longoria, Keppinger set for rehab stints in Class AAA

Jeff Keppinger was stuffing bats into his bat bag Thursday inside the Tampa Bay Rays clubhouse while Evan Longoria was busy tweeting to his fans that, "Finally finally finally I'm back!!" Longoria and Keppinger were packing for their minor league rehab stints with Class AAA Durham, which was the best news the Rays could have received after the New York Mets completed...

Three-time All Star Evan Longoria is set to return to Tampa Bay's lineup after being sidelined more three months with a partially torn left hamstring. The Rays said the third baseman will be activated from the disabled list before Tuesday's game against Toronto. Rays rookie alters his repertoire, throwing Marlins a curveball

Matt Moore mixed in a curveball to go with his fastball and changeup in order to give the Marlins a different look Friday, and he turned in his best performance of the season in the Rays' 11-0 victory. The rookie allowed only a one-out single in the first inning and walked three in seven innings as he won his third straight start and improved to 4-5. "I don't think...

Inside The Park Blog: Inside The Park: Marlins at Rays by Jason Collette

The Rays come in to this game tonight with the 10th worst team VORP at 55.8 while the team's TAv is 16th at .262.  Last season, the team had the  fifth-best VOPR at 175.3 and the fifth-bestTAv at .275. The injuries the Rays have had to deal with, most notably playing the last 40 games without superstar Evan Longoria, have certainly been an issue with the offensive struggles...

Moore helps Rays rout Marlins

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Rookie Matt Moore and two relievers combined on a one-hitter Friday night, helping the Tampa Bay Rays snap a three-game losing streak with an 11-0 victory over the Miami Marlins. Ben Zobrist homered and Desmond Jennings drove in four runs in support of Moore (4-5), who gave up a first-inning single and walked three in seven innings. The hard-throwing...

Rays welcome Marlins after brutal Mets sweep

ST. PETERSBURG It was as quiet as a library in the Tampa Bay Rays' clubhouse late Thursday afternoon a stark contrast to the jubilation that marked their three-game road sweep last week of the Miami Marlins. But so much for sweep dreams this time around. Now it was the Rays who felt the sting of losing all three games courtesy of the resurgent New York Mets, who came to town...

Contraction Could Be on the Horizon Pt. 1

A few weeks ago I wrote about geographic realignment in baseball and said it wouldn't be the craziest thing to happen to Major League Baseball in the next decade. That would be contraction, and it could be coming to a league champion near you. The Tampa Bay Rays won the American League in 2008 and captured the American League East last season, yet draw as many fans as MLS...

From the Archives - Desmond Jennings

Before he made the Major Leagues with the Tampa Bay Rays, Desmond Jennings was a football star who had committed to play for the Alabama Crimson Tide. See him in action in this glimpse from the archives.

Mets 9, Rays 6

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Mets and Rays entered their three-game series at Tropicana Field going in decidedly different directions. A sweep by the Mets changed things completely for both. New York pounded another Rays starter and got an adequate start from Johan Santana on Thursday to win 9-6 and finish off a dominating three-game effort. New York has lost six of seven and...

Back ailment keeps Rays' Scott on bench

Just when it appeared as if the injury bug had finally left the Tampa Bay Rays, manager Joe Maddon announced before Wednesday's game that designated hitter Luke Scott, the team's RBI leader, has a stiff lower back that has kept him out of the lineup since Saturday. Scott, who did not make himself available before Wednesday's 9-1 loss to the visiting New York Mets, apparently...
