Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Matt Moore will have Tommy John ligament replacement surgery next week and is estimated to be out about a year. Moore, 24, threw Monday afternoon at Camden Yards before the start of a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles, but there was enough discomfort that he decided he was unable to pitch with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament. Manager Joe Maddon confirmed the news to the team's official website in a report published early Tuesday morning. "What was coming out, it's a shame to have to be shut down right now, but it just wasn't comfortable," Moore told the Tampa Bay Times. "Being stuck in the position I am right now, where it's not exactly comfortable but it's not exactly completely broke, it's kind of one of those things that you know it's going to get worse. If we had to have our best guess, that was what we would say -- it's going to get worse." Moore told the Tampa Bay Times the surgery will take place April 22 and be performed by noted specialist Dr. James Andrews. He last pitched April 7 in Kansas City, where he left after 4 1/3 innings with pain in the left elbow. On April 8, he was placed on the 15-day disabled list with left elbow soreness. He visited Dr. Andrews in Pensacola, Fla., and Moore decided to test his elbow in the throwing session before choosing surgery. Moore is 0-2 with a 2.70 ERA and six strikeouts in two starts this season. Last year, he won a career-best 17 games in 27 starts and was named to his first All-Star team.
