We have our first entry into oddest spring training injury, thanks to Tampa Bay lefthander David Price, who suffered minor neck spasms after toweling himself off too hard. You can’t make this stuff up people.

Price left the Rays spring game after pitching two complete innings, even though he was scheduled for three, after his bout of vigorous toweling left him unable to continue, not so much out of pain or discomfort, but as more of a precaution.

Said Price…

“I was just drying my head off in between innings,” he said. “It’s happened to me two times before. The towel just catches the back of my head and it pulls my neck forward. I just felt it a little bit in back of my neck and just wanted to be cautious with it. … It’s spasms, there’s a little pop and it just spasms up and gets a little tight.”

“I’ll get a good night’s sleep tonight and I should be all right tomorrow,” he said. “I pull it over my head and I pull it forward and I guess it just catches like the back of my head. I don’t know.”

Manager Joe Maddon wins the award for best comment on Price’s toweling mishap, courtesy of this delicious little zinger…

“David might need better technque when it comes to toweling himself down,” he said. “He’s been doing it for 20-some years now but apparently doesn’t have it down yet.”

Price should stick to air drying between innings until he can learn to safely towel off without injuring himself.  Same goes for showers too, although that might make for some uncomfortable post-game interviews.
