Fox Sports Florida:
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Boston and Tampa Bay have had a brief benches-clearing scrum in the sixth inning after the Rays' Matt Joyce was hit by a pitch from Red Sox starter John Lackey.
Lackey hit Joyce in the center of the back with two outs and Boston leading 6-4 Monday night. Joyce took several steps toward the mound and shouted at Lackey. Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia got in between the two and restrained Joyce.
Both dugouts and bullpens emptied and Lackey could be seen saying that he didn't mean to hit the Rays' leadoff hitter.
There was some pushing and shoving near the first base line but the umpires chose not to eject any players.

Monday night was interesting, to say the least.
The five-hour, 24-minute game that went 14 innings featured 32 hits and 18 runs, but that was just the beginning of the fireworks between Tampa Bay and Boston. Red Sox starter John Lackey sent a pitch into Rays outfielder Matt Joyce‘s back in the sixth inning, clearing both benches.
While Lackey said afterward that the pitch was not...
The benches cleared when Boston Red Sox pitcher John Lackey nailed Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Matt Joyce in the bottom of sixth inning.
John Lackey has shown a tendency to give up the long ball in his last few starts. Luckily, the Red Sox were intent on bringing some offense of their own on Monday night.
A six-run first inning staked Lackey to an early lead against the Rays in this one, but he didn’t have the full six runs to work with for very long. A leadoff home run for the Rays in the bottom of the first greeted...
Matt Joyce sent a message with his bat.
Joyce hit one of three homers off Jon Lester to help the Tampa Bay Rays beat the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox 8-3 on Tuesday night.
Joyce, one day after being hit by a pitch that sparked a bench-clearing scrum, put the Rays up 7-3 on a two-run shot in the fifth that ended Lester's night.
''It's a great feeling, especially...
If the Rays want revenge for John Lackey‘s beaning of Matt Joyce on Monday, they’re not likely to get it early on Tuesday night. After all, neither team can afford to lose a starting pitcher in this game, after they both burned up their bullpens in an extra-inning affair the last time out.
NESN Nation’s Dan Duquette isn’t ruling out any unruly behavior from the two teams...
John Lackey is healthy again, and that's meant trouble for opponents.
The Tampa Bay Rays, though, have given him trouble in recent years, something he'd like to put an end to Monday night.
Lackey looks to turn in his fifth straight strong start when the Boston Red Sox visit the Rays to open a three-game series.
The Red Sox (39-25) have won six of eight after taking two...
The Tampa Bay Rays rallied from a six-run deficit against the Boston Red Sox, then rallied again down two runs in the 10th inning and eventually lost a heartbreaker 10-8 in 14 innings in the first game of a three-game series at Tropicana Field. The game took 5 hours, 24 minutes to play, making it the second longest game in Rays history. While the game had several dramatic moments...

Joe Maddon might be trying to suck John Lackey in to a war of words over hitting Matt Joyce, but Lackey wants none of it, according to MLB.com.
"I totally believe it was intentional," Maddon told MLB.com. "I saw the replay, and it was absolutely validated, my thoughts."
Lackey responded by saying that he "doesn't want to drag it...
Monday's are usually pretty bad, its back to work and no more BBQ's. But this Monday opens a three game series in Tampa Bay against the Rays and that alone will help me get through a miserable Monday work day. With Tampa Bay only 4.5 games back in the division, the Red Sox will look to take this series and push the Rays down farther in the...
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. The Boston Red Sox brought the American League Easts best record to Tropicana Field. But the past two days, the Tampa Bay Rays have brought the power.
On Tuesday night, the Rays marked a franchise first: Hitting four home runs in consecutive games. On Monday, they smacked four in a 10-8 loss in 14 innings. On Tuesday, they added another four in an 8-3 victory...
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon watched the videotape and it didn't change his mind that Boston's John Lackey hit Rays leadoff hitter Matt Joyce intentionally Monday night.
Lackey's pitch struck Joyce in the center of the back, which resulted in a bench-clearing scrum in the sixth-inning of Boston's 10-8, 14-inning win.
"I saw the...
Dylan Axelrod (TOR, @HOU)
The White Sox are at the bottom of the AL Central standings, though that's no fault of their starting rotation, which owns a 3.68 ERA on the season (fourth-best on the Junior Circuit). Axelrod has been a major component in this machine over the past month, surrendering a meager 10 runs in his last five starts (29 innings). The 27-year...
The Boston Red Sox (39-25) begin a seven game road trip tonight in Tampa. The Rays (34-28) currently trail the first place Sox by four games in the American League East.
With three games against the Rays and four against the Orioles in Baltimore, the Red Sox could create some distance or find themselves in fourth place by the end of the week.
