Friday was a rough day for the Oakland Athletics.
First, the club was lampooned by the Onion. Then, there was the unprecedented postponement of the night’s game against the Seattle Mariners due to the the fact that the field was absolutely soaked. Joe Stiglich of CSN Bay Area provides the backstory on just how the situation was brought about.
“We got here this morning and the infield was underwater,” said David Rinetti, the A’s vice president of stadium operations …“In the last week we’ve had probably more rain at the facility than we’ve had since I’ve been here.”
On the recommendation of an unnamed “weather consultant” the team decided to leave the tarp off the infield on Thursday night to allow the field to dry out. Instead, it rained more than had been expected and the plan backfired in a major way.
Naturally, the Twittersphere was abuzz in the wake of the unfortunate turn of events. Here’s a sampling of the reaction.
