David Ortiz did it again. Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 9th, Jonny Gomes doubled off Michael Kirkman to lead off the inning for his fourth hit of the game. (Guess he likes batting second.) In a very perplexing move, the Rangers decided to walk Dustin Pedroia intentionally to set up a force out. Only problem was, David Ortiz, who is so clutch the Red Sox organization arbitrarily gave him an award to celebrate him in the middle of his career, was up next. He didn't waste any time. Kirkman tossed a fastball middle in and Ortiz slugged it into the bullpen to end the game. A quick flip of the bat and about eight paces before he went into his home run trot told you everything Papi thought about having Pedroia walked in front of him. It was the Sox' 5th walkoff of the season. Now I understand wanting to set up force outs and all that, but...man. Walking somebody to pitch to David Ortiz, even with a lefty on the mound? Ron Washington's going to have to stew on that on the flight home. Beyond Papi, the credit goes to the top of the order. Gomes and leadoff man Jacoby Ellsbury each had four hits. Pedroia had a hit, a walk, and two RBI, and led the team with 25 pitches seen. Guess who was second in that stat, by the way? Jose Iglesias, the man who can't hit and has no patience, walked three times and singled in the 8-hole, while seeing 23 pitches. Will Middlebrooks homered in Pawtucket tonight -- it's a good thing, because Jose is not letting up. That's a 10-game hitting streak for Iglesias, for those of you counting at home. Jon Lester pitched serviceably, yielding three runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out four. It wasn't his sharpest, and he was tagged for two homers, but the Rangers have a tough offense. Junichi Tazawa, Koji Uehara, and Andrew Bailey allowed three hits but didn't walk anyone and didn't allow a run. Just like you draw it up. In tonight's other baseball action, the Red Sox took high school pitcher Trey Ball, a 6'6" lefthander from Indiana. Ball is a two-way player, so the Sox will have a decision to make about whether to have him pitch or play outfield, but much like Casey Kelly a few years ago, they appear to be more interested in him as a pitcher. First they have to sign him; he's committed to play at the University of Texas next year. Box score Image

David Ortiz “Famous as F**K” t-shirt

David Ortiz really likes the F-word, we guess? Ortiz dropped a F-bomb in response to the Boston Marathon bombing and was sporting a t-shirt that read “Famous as F**K” after hitting a walk off home run on Thursday night against Texas. The t-shirt may not have been the best idea but considering Ortiz is hitting .325/.399/.624 with 11 home runs and 45 RBI there does not figure...

That last laser beam in the bottom of the 9th inning last night was Ortiz’s 10th career walk-off home run in a Red Sox uniform,  that’s 7th best all-time in baseball history, not counting the damage he has...

Jonny Gomes like cat with 9 lives

Jonny Gomes is no stranger to throwing caution to the wind while playing the outfield. As it turns out, he has a good reason -- or five -- for playing so fearlessly. "I've almost died five times," Gomes told WEEI.com. Gomes, one of the most charismatic individuals in the Red Sox' very loose clubhouse, has apparently stared death in the face five times. He'...

David Ortiz Makes Rangers Pay for Waking Up Monster, Caps Off Hard-Fought Win With Walkoff Heroics

BOSTON — The Rangers were asked to pick their poison. Jonny Gomes doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning with the score tied 3-3 on Thursday. At that point, Texas manager Ron Washington had to decide whether to let left-hander Michael Kirkman pitch to the right-handed hitting Dustin Pedroia or walk Pedroia to face the always dangerous David Ortiz in a lefty-lefty matchup...

David Ortiz Thought Red Sox Signing Josh Hamilton ‘Was Going to Happen,’ Especially After Trade With Dodgers

The Red Sox brought in a number of free agents during the offseason. Josh Hamilton wasn’t one of them. Hamilton, considered the biggest offensive free agent on the open market this past offseason, ended up signing with the Angels, but it wasn’t before tons of speculation about whether or not the 2010 American League MVP would land in Boston. Even David Ortiz thought there was...

Jonny Gomes speak out about Biogenesis scandal

Sam Galanis Contributing Writer The Biogenesis scandal going on in the MLB doesn’t just affect the 25 or so players that were on the list connecting them to the suspect “anti-aging” clinic in South Florida. David Ortiz hits walk-off homer, rips off shirt

Ron Washington and the Rangers made the decision to intentionally walk Dustin Pedroia to get a lefty-on-lefty matchup with David Ortiz in the bottom of the ninth inning in a tie game Thursday night. In retrospect, that was a very poor decision. Ortiz took the first pitch from Michael Kirkman and lined it straight into the Rangers bullpen in right field, a walkoff blast to give the...
