The Red Sox didn't have to worry about their biggest weakness tonight, as the game was put away before the bullpen got involved. Boston won 11-4 while compiling 20 hits off four Rockies pitchers. Juan Nicasio started, but lasted just two and a third innings as the Sox pummeled him for 12 hits and seven runs. Each ensuing reliever walked at least one, gave up multiple hits, and gave up at least one run. Four Sox had three hits: Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, Daniel Nava, and new starting third baseman Jose Iglesias. In fact, David Ortiz and Jarrod Saltalamacchia were the lone Sox to register just one hit -- and Papi walked three times. Today isn't going to do anything against Dustin Pedroia's murder charge in Colorado.  No Sox homered, although Stephen Drew came close. He hit a pitch to dead-center -- only a few feet away from his brother's ALCS grand slam six years ago -- but the ball took a funny hop off the top of the wall and came back to the field. The umpires reviewed the play for a whopping eight minutes (it felt like an hour and a half) before determining that there was nothing conclusive to overturn the call, so Drew received a triple instead. (Naturally, Jose immediately slugged him home, so it didn't matter anyway.) Starter Ryan Dempster was solid in six innings, surrendering six hits and walking two. He struck out just four batters, but was relatively efficient in his pitch count. It was Dempster's third win of the month, as his record is up to 5-8. Obviously the win-loss record is quite variable; I'm satisfied with Dempster's performance. A low-4s ERA with surprising strikeout ability in an ultra-competitive AL East is well worth what the Red Sox are paying. The Sox offensive dominance allowed for the bullpen -- well, the good parts -- to get some rest, as Alex Wilson, Craig Breslow, and freshly called up Pedro Beato each took turns. Box score
