Apologies for the severe lack of posts – lots of non-blog related life events going on recently. This is about the time of year I forget about everything that happened to the Phillies in 2011 and start getting really excited for 2012. Since I haven’t been able to examine each move individually, I figured I’d do an overview of all the moves they’ve made now that they are pretty set. I’ll rank them by size of commitment. 1. Signed Jonathan Papelbon to 4 year, $50 million deal with vesting option for 5th year A laughable deal for a closer, Papelbon will likely be (or, better be) good, but was not worthy of the largest deal for a relief pitcher in MLB history. In a market flooded with closers, Amaro badly and embarrassingly mismanaged it. Taking the money out of it – Papelbon should be as good or better than Ryan Madson was in 2011, and despite some well publicized blown saves at the end of 2011, had an outstanding year last year, ending the year 2nd ...

Wilson! A Strange Phillies Trade…

In an odd move this week, the Phillies traded my favorite utility man, Wilson Valdez, to the Reds for a minor-league pitcher. 26-year old Jeremy Horst spent most of last season with triple-A Louisville, where he posted a 1-4 record and had a 2.81 ERA in 36 games. He did make 12 relief appearances for the Reds and posted a 2.93 ERA. Horst will get an invite to Spring Training. But...

Jimmy Rollins Player Projection No. 77

Key Stats: Jimmy Rollins has been ranked in the top 90 five out of the last six years. Only Hanley Ramirez has been a more steady force at that position during that time. Rollins has averaged 18 home runs, 96 runs scored, 70 RBI, 34 steals, and a .271 average during that time. He’s also managed to stay healthy over that time with almost 4,000 plate appearances during that stretch...

Roy Oswalt and Cardinals number 44

As many National League fans already know, right-handed pitcher Roy Oswalt has worn the number 44 for his entire big-league career, which began with 9 ½ stellar seasons with the Houston Astros before a 2010 deadline trade to the Philadelphia Phillies. If rumors that the 36-year-old is on the verge of signing with the St. Louis Cardinals for 2012 come to reality, the question will...

2012 Reader Top 30, #17, 18 and 19

Austin Wright and Cesar Hernandez finished within 2 votes of each other, and because of this, we’ll do a run-off vote. The winner will be #17, the runner up will be #18, and I’m also going to attach the poll for #19 here as well. Cody Overbeck and Tyler Cloyd will enter the ballot for #19. As a reminder on eligibility for the list, to be eligible the player must have...
