The Boston Red Sox have made a deal with the Colorado Rockies that will send Brad Emaus to Boston for a player to be named later. Emaus saw just 42 plate appearances in 2011 as a member of the Mets before being acquired by theRockies. At AAA Colorado Springs the 25 year old infielder hit well with a .313/.389/.564 line in 186 plate appearances. The young infielder gives Boston addition depth at AAA for second base and third base.
Red Sox fans will hope that this trade is forgotten over the course of the season, as Emaus is almost certainly not up to filling Dustin Pedroia or Kevin Youkilis’ shoes. However, the move does make sense from the front office’s perspective. Emaus is solid infielder and he could help the team in need of a back up or replacement at second or third. If Emaus doesn’t serve any need for the Red Sox, he could help them in the trade market during the season.

The Plan and the Payroll
The Red Sox luxury tax payroll currently stands at about $130M. When you add in projected arbitration awards for Ortiz, Ellsbury, Saltalamacchia, Bard, Bailey, and the bench players, that leaves the Red Sox with little to no room remaining under the luxury tax threshold. As I’ve argued, the Red Sox offseason should be understood as a specifically structured and cleverly executed...
