The Boston Red Sox acquired outfielder/first baseman Conor Jackson from the Oakland Athletics for minor-league reliever Jason Rice late Wednesday night.
Jackson was batting .249 with four homers and 38 RBIs this season for the Athletics.
The Red Sox transferred reliever Bobby Jenks (back) to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Jackson on the 40-man roster. Jenks hasn't pitched since July 7 and has yet to begin a minor-league rehab assignment.
Rice posted a 4-5 mark with a 3.69 ERA in 44 appearances for Triple-A Pawtucket.
