In search of starting pitching depth the Boston Red Sox have turned to a pitcher recently cast off by the Yankees, Kevin Millwood, and signed him to a minor-league deal, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports.
When Millwood was with the Yankees he was effective in the minor leagues, but his fastball was only clocking in the mid-80′s and they didn’t not believe his stuff would translate to the major league level. So when his opt-out date came and there was no sign he would be called up to the Bronx Millwood left.
This is a very minor move for the Red Sox. They’ll take a look at Millwood in the minors and if they don’t like him they’ll just release him. However they already have two starting pitchers on the DL and Josh Beckett left the game early the other day so there is a possibility that they will have no choice but to use Millwood.
