The Red Sox signed the best outfielder on the market and traded for one of the best first basemen in baseball, but they won’t be adding the best free agent reliever to their bullpen this winter.
The Angels have signed left-hander Scott Downs to a 3-year deal worth $15 million, but Boston is now targeting former Twins right-hander Matt Guerrier according to WEEI.com’s Alex Speier…
The Sox were reportedly one of the favorites to sign Downs, but the former Blue Jay is headed to LA. Theo Epstein has now officially offered Guerrier a contract, but the terms of that offer are unknown at this point.
Guerrier went 5-7 in Minnesota last season with a 3.17 ERA in 74 appearances. In the last 6 seasons, only once has Guerrier’s ERA been over 3 and a half.
He’s more of a ground-ball pitcher than a dominant strikeout guy but has showcased fairly good command throughout his career. He limited right-handed hitters to a .210 batting average in 2010.
