12:30 p.m.: Will Middlebrooks has really been struggling, both in the field and at the plate. The Red Sox third baseman will be given the day off on Sunday. Middlebrooks is 3-for-19 on Boston’s current road trip, which negates the strides he appeared to be making at the plate toward the tail end of the team’s recent homestand. Making matters worse is that Middlebrooks made an error in each of the last two games. Filling in for Middlebrooks will be Pedro Ciriaco, who will bat ninth. That bumps Stephen Drew up to eighth. Shane Victorino, who played in back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday after returning from a back issue, will be out of the lineup on Sunday. Daniel Nava will bat second and play right field, while Mike Carp will start in left field and bat sixth. The rest of Sunday’s lineup is below. Red Sox (20-10) Jacoby Ellsbury, CF Daniel Nava, RF Dustin Pedroia, 2B David Ortiz, DH Mike Napoli, 1B Mike Carp, LF David Ross, C Stephen Drew, SS Pedro Ciriaco, 3B Jon Lester (4-0,...

Can Yu Darvish strike out 300 hitters this year?

Yu Darvish is having an unreal sophomore season for the Rangers. In seven starts and 45 2/3 innings, Darvish has a 2.56 ERA, accrued 1.9 fWAR, and has struck out a league-leading 72 hitters. To put in perspective how vast the 15 strikeout difference between Darvish and second-place AJ Burnett is, consider the fact that Burnett could throw a nine inning complete game at his current...

Will Middlebrooks Must Play Way Out of Current Slump, As Red Sox Really Have No Other Choice

Most 24-year-olds with less than 400 career major league at-bats who start the season hitting .195 through 30 games stare a demotion right in the face. Not Will Middlebrooks. The Red Sox third baseman must play his way out of his current slump. Middlebrooks has struggled mightily to begin the year. In addition to hitting below the Mendonza Line — his .195 average is ninth-worst...

Recap: Rangers walk off with sweep

(Photo by Rick Yeatts/Getty Images) I guess you could say it was a "good game", if you are a Rangers fan. The Sox went up 3-0 on Yu Darvish through the first two innings, then allowed 3 un-answered runs and played into the 9th in a 3-3 tie. Clayton Mortensen came in...

The Middlebrooks muddle

photo Jason Miller/Getty Images Jan-Christian Sorensen Contributing Writer Prior to 2004, Red Sox fans often traded in a devalued, hindsight-based currency of What-Ifs: — What if Frazee hadn’t hocked Ruth to the Yankees? — What if Pesky had been a split-second earlier on the relay throw as Slaughter made his Mad Dash? — What if Conigliaro had been able to get out of the...

Red Sox Struggle on Offense Against Rangers, Remain Confident in Team to Close Out Series (Video)

The Red Sox have dropped the first two games in a three-game series with the Texas Rangers, and the Rangers have held the typically powerful Boston offense to just one run in two games. The Rangers have had their way with the Sox thus far, but third baseman Will Middlebrooks is confident his team will be able to get back in their groove on Sunday and close out the series with a...

Adrian Beltre, Will Middlebrooks Can Turn to Each Other as Source of Inspiration During Weekend Series

Here comes the part where we all make a joke — something along the lines of, “Hey, why can’t the Red Sox get players like that?” Adrian Beltre turned in a monster game against the Red Sox on Friday. He went 4-for-5 and delivered a bases-clearing double that broke the game open in the fourth inning. It’s exactly the type of performance that can bust a veteran out of a prolonged...

Damn, check out that Ace

Coming into the 2013 season if you asked anyone in Red Sox nation who the ace of the club was the almost unanimous answer would have been Jon Lester. Now, the unanimous answer has to be Clay Buchholz. More than just being the Red Sox ace so far this season, Buchholz has been one of the league's best pitchers and looking to become the first 7 game winner tonight against the Minnesota...

Game 31: Red Sox at Rangers - No sweep please

Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer The Boston Red Sox (20-10) will try to avoid being swept for the first time this season, as they take on the Texas Rangers (19-11) in what should be a fantastic pitching matchup. Both teams send their ace to the mound at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Jon Lester (4-0, 3.11 ERA) goes for Boston and Yu Darvish (5-1, 2.33 ERA) goes for Texas. Lester...

Shane Victorino, Will Middlebrooks Back in Lineup As Red Sox Look to Rekindle Offense Behind Clay Buchholz

The Red Sox are looking to put a less-than-productive weekend behind them coming into Monday night’s game against the Twins, and they’ll do so behind their best pitcher so far this year, Clay Buchholz, and a lineup eager to regain its spark. Shane Victorino returns to the Red Sox’ batting order, playing right field, after being given a day off at the end of Boston’s road...

3 Stars of the game: Game 31

Well that certainly was not how anyone in the Red Sox organization wanted the series in Texas to go. The Sox dropped all 3 games to the Rangers, who now have allowed St. Louis and Texas to tie them with the best record in the major leagues at 20-11. Starting pitching was not the problem in the last 2 games of this series, the lack of run support was. Here are the 3 stars of the game...

Shane Victorino Out of Red Sox Lineup Against Rangers’ No. 1 Starter, Yu Darvish

Shane Victorino will get a rest on Sunday afternoon in Arlington, Texas, as the Red Sox face off against the Rangers’ No. 1 starter, Yu Darvish. Mike Carp will be inserted into the lineup for Victorino as Daniel Nava will take his spot in right field and in the two hole. Victorino is 1-for-7 since returning to the field from a back injury. Pedro Ciriaco will start at third base...

Three things the Red Sox learned in Texas

Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer U. G. L. Y. Yeah, it was that ugly over the weekend in Arlington, Texas. Red Sox starting pitchers gave up 12 runs in 14.2 innings, almost a run per inning. The Sox lineup scored just four runs, including being shut out in Game 1. So what all did that tell us? I’ve got you covered right here, right now. 1) Someone needs to step up behind Jon...
