While the Red Sox continue to piece together their 2013 roster, we at least know what the club’s preseason slate looks like. The Red Sox unveiled their spring training schedule on Monday, and the action will kick off with a doubleheader against Northeastern and Boston College on Feb. 21. Boston’s first Grapefruit League game will take place on Feb. 23, when the Sox host the Tampa Bay Rays. Red Sox pitchers and catchers will report on Feb. 12, and the first full-squad workout is scheduled for Feb. 15. The recently constructed JetBlue Park — entering its second season as the Red Sox’ spring home — will then play host to 20 games. Boston will play 38 exhibition games in total, with 35 being of the Grapefruit League variety. The Red Sox will even host Team Puerto Rico on March 5, as this marks an offseason in which baseball fans will be treated to the World Baseball Classic. Those fans looking to take in the action down in Fort Myers will be able to purchase tickets beginning Dec. 8 at ...

Ben Cherington Says Red Sox Need to Be Selective in Signing Free Agents to Keep Young Core (Video)

The Red Sox are taking a selective approach to this year’s thin free agent pool. Ben Cherington said the team is trying to keep a young core, so they’re trying to find players in free agency that are either just entering their prime, or can produce well into their 30s. By Cherington’s remarks it seems that, as you can imagine, the Red Sox’s focus in free agency will be in...

Report: Red Sox Still Pursuing Josh Hamilton, See Outfielder as ‘Terrific Talent’

The Red Sox have been connected to just about every name on the free agent market in some way or another, but could they really be gearing up for a strong push at the market’s biggest name? Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington isn’t afraid to admit the team’s interest in Josh Hamilton, going on XM Radio on Tuesday and saying that the team still has interest in the free-agent...

Red Sox Rumors: Kyle Lohse, Josh Hamilton, Hiroki Kuroda

The Boston Red Sox have inquired on free agent right-hander Kyle Lohse, remain interested in outfielder Josh Hamilton and “made a really strong push” to sign veteran starter Hiroki Kuroda before he re-upped with the New York Yankees, reports Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. Heard from yet another source that #RedSox made a really strong push on Kuroda. Potentially important...

Report: Red Sox Sign Jonny Gomes To Two-Year Deal

While Daniel Nava emerged last season in the outfield and with Ryan Kalish being injury prone, the Boston Red Sox have only have one outfielder who they view as an everyday outfielder. And that is Jacoby Ellsbury. They do also have Ryan Sweeney but you have to wonder if he'll be offered a contract for next year. As for now, he's still on the 40-man roster. And like...

Red Sox ink Jonny Gomes to two-year deal

The Boston Red Sox agreed to a contract with an outfielder today, but the name isn't one that many thought would be on their radar: Jonny Gomes, a key part of the Oakland Athletics' AL West run last season. Gomes is getting a two year deal, and will make $10 million over the two seasons he's under contract. Gomes, who will turn 32 on Thursday, is an odd fit for the...

Knucklehead Quotient Upped for 2013

Jonny Gomes, star of many a Red Sox-Rays donnybrook and half-assed wrestling aficionado, is now part of our fightin’ nine. Terms are $10 million for two years, pending the old “turn your head and cough.” Honestly, I’ve never been much of a Gomes fan; haven’t been since that infamous dust-up between half the Rays’ bench [...]

Your Morning Dump...where the Sox are ahead of schedule

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. With baseball’s winter meetings still two weeks away, the Red Sox are well ahead of the glacial pace of last fall. “We have a lot of work to do because we lost 93 games,” Cherington said “But there’s...

The Boston Red Sox are closing in on a two-year deal with free agent outfielder Jonny Gomes, Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports. Heidi Watney Returns to Baseball. Let the Healing Begin.

Last summer, as Bobby V led the Red Sox through the AL East with all the grace and precision of a blind guy trying to parallel park a Greyhound bus on Mass Ave at rush hour during a meteor shower/missile attack, I knew that something was missing. No, it wasn’t charm or class or motivation [...]
