When reporters entered the Red Sox clubhouse Monday night following Boston's 9-2 victory over the Texas Rangers, the musical selection was a telling one: "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," by Michael Jackson.

Who knows if the song was actually directed at manager Bobby Valentine, but it appropriately capped a tumultuous day for the veteran skipper.

The morning began with a Boston Herald columnist calling for Valentine's ouster as a last-ditch effort to wake the slumbering team, and the topic dominated the local airwaves right up until game time.

Cherington received a vote of confidence from owner John Henry and general manager Ben Cherington, and then his club went out and played maybe its most complete game of the season while evening its record at 55-55.

"I regret that they had to do it," Valentine said. "If our record was better, they wouldn't have had to do it. Totally appreciated, though, if they felt it was necessary and they think it's good for the guys."

While Cherington stopped short of committing to Valentine for the rest of the season -- "I'm not getting into timelines," he said -- neither he nor owner John Henry sounded as if they planned on making a switch anytime soon.

"To blame Bobby Valentine for the Red Sox being .500 at this point in the season is simply wrong," Henry said in an e-mail to three Boston media outlets, including the Herald. "A lot has been written about injuries to key players this year. The impact of that on the Sox this year should not be discounted. There has been no lack of effort from our players and we have had a number of them playing hurt. I watch every game, and the effort our players put in night after night is very clear to see."
