SAN FRANCISCO -- Brandon Phillips hit a two-run homer, Jay Bruce added a solo shot, and the Cincinnati bullpen took care of the rest as the Reds beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 Saturday night in Game 1 of the National League Division Series. The Reds survived the loss of ace Johnny Cueto, who exited in the first inning due to back spasms. Phillips, who had three hits, also drove in an insurance run in the ninth as the Reds earned their first postseason win in 17 years. Bruce had two hits, and he improved to 8-for-15 (.533) lifetime against Giants starter Matt Cain, who took the loss. Buster Posey hit a home run for the Giants, who played their first postseason contest since beating the Texas Rangers in the World Series in 2010. Gregor Blanco and Posey had two hits apiece, but otherwise the Giants got little going against the Reds staff. They were 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left 11 on base. Giants pitchers retired 12 of 13 Reds at one point, but the dama...

NLDS Game 1: Mat Latos saves the day

No, no, no! #reds — Jon Cross (@zeldink) October 7, 2012 That was what I tweeted after Johnny Cueto pitched to the second batter of the first inning and left the mound in pain. The game, the series, and the playoffs all felt like they’d ended right then and there. The Reds’s starting rotation without any injuries for the whole season would lose their ace in the first playoff...

P&G commits $2 million to Reds Urban Youth Academy

From the Reds... P&G has committed $2,000,000 to the Cincinnati Reds and the Reds Community Fund’s “Urban Youth Academy.” The Reds Urban Youth Academy will be a baseball and softball training facility at Roselawn Park in Cincinnati that provides free, year-round instruction for boys and girls ages 6-18 from Greater Cincinnati and throughout Reds Country. “P...

The Reds’ old pine cup

Alfredo Simon celebrates the Reds’ winning of the 2012 National League Central division by dousing himself from the pine cup. On the night the Cincinnati Reds clinched the National League Central division, you may have seen some images of players with a brass cup during the celebration, including Alfredo Simon and Bronson Arroyo. Everyone was gathered around it at some point. The...

Phillips' big night helps Reds overcome loss of Cueto

SAN FRANCISCO -- Brandon Phillips enjoys the playoff spotlight. The Cincinnati second baseman hit a two-run homer, added an RBI single and finished 3-for-5 as the Reds beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 Saturday night in Game 1 of the National League Division Series. "The whole world is watching," Phillips said. "This is a good time to be famous. You can be famous...

It is time to embrace Dusty Baker

Dusty Baker has been a punching bag for manager-bashers for years. It started with his decade as the manager of the Giants where he coddled and cowed to Barry Bonds while ultimately failing in all three of his post seasons there. Then he was considered the guy who threw away the careers of Mark Prior and Kerry Wood during his run with the Cubs and helped create the misanthrope...

Reds lose 19-game winner Johnny Cueto to injury

Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto left his Game 1 start against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday night in the first inning because of back spasms. The Red said he is day to day. The right-hander threw a second strike to No. 2 hitter Marco Scutaro and walked off the mound in obvious pain. A trainer and manager Dusty Baker rushed out to check on him, and the 19-game winner came out...

Reds take 2-0 lead in NLDS against the Giants

Reds fans had no complaints about staying up late for game two of the NLDS in San Francisco thanks to starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo and a 9-0 win. Arroyo’s seven innings and the hard-swinging offense never allowed the Giants to even get close to a comeback. Ryan Ludwick set the tone for the game in the top of the second inning, launching a home run into center field...

State of the Farm – Catcher

Today marks the beginning of the State of the Farm series for 2012. Each Monday I will look at one position and the state of it throughout the farm system. I will go in order of positions, starting with catcher and working around the diamond until we get to the pitchers where I will look at both starting pitching and relief pitching. The position that was arguably the Reds strongest...

Reds-Giants: 10 notes about Game One of the NLDS

The NL Central Champion Reds (97-65) and NL West Champion Giants (94-68) will kickoff Game One of the NLDS on Saturday beginning at 9:37pm ET. Cincinnati will pit ace Johnny Cueto (19-9, 2.78) up against San Francisco ace Matt Cain (16-5, 2.79) in what is sure to be a pitcher's duel, on paper at least. The game will be aired by TBS. Here are 10 notes for you to mull over...

Reds Lose Ace, Win Game

Eventually, you’re all going to get sick of me talking about how everything that’s going on now is for all intents and purposes unpredictable. Hopefully you aren’t sick of it yet, because Game 1 of the NLDS between the Reds and the Giants went to show why playoff predictions are a complete waste of time. Allow me to review the action:(1)Ace Cincinnati starter Johnny Cueto had...

Ludwick's HR gives Arroyo, Reds early lead over SF

Ryan Ludwick homered off Madison Bumgarner to give Bronson Arroyo and the Cincinnati Reds a 1-0 lead over the San Francisco Giants after three innings Sunday night in Game 2 of the NL division series. The Reds won 5-2 the previous night in the opener of the best-of-five matchup. Arroyo retired the first nine batters he faced, including consecutive strikeouts of Brandon Belt, Gregor...

Series preview: San Francisco Giants (94-68) vs Cincinnati Reds (97-65)

The Reds jockeyed with several other NL Central teams (including the Pirates!) for the divisional lead for the first half of the season, but after July 19 they moved into first place and never looked back. The closest they got to losing the lead was on August 9th, after NL MVP Shawn Camp exerted his [...]
