The Cincinnati Reds traded left-handed starter Travis Wood and two other players to the Chicago Cubs for left-handed reliever Sean Marshall.
Marshall, 6-foot-7, was 6-6 with a 2.26 ERA and five saves last season.
Wood started 35 games for the Reds over the past two years, posting a 6-6 record and 4.84 ERA in 2011, getting demoted to Triple-A after struggling late in the season.
The Cubs also added prospects Dave Sappelt, who hit .243 in 38 games with Cincinnnati, and Ronald Torreyes.

The Cincinnati Reds acquired left-handed reliever Sean Marshall from the Chicago Cubs on Friday for young lefty starter Travis Wood and two other players. It was the second time in a week that the Reds gave up several prospects for pitching help. They earlier sent four players, including Edinson Volquez, to San Diego for starter Mat Latos.
At one point, Cubs president Theo Epstein said Sean Marshall ‘‘might be the most valuable left-handed reliever in all of baseball.’’ After trading him to the Cincinnati Reds on Friday for unproven young starter Travis Wood and two prospects, Epstein called the deal ‘‘the type of move that...

This is usually the time of year where I take two months to breathe. Don’t panic, I’m still here and still going to go nuts with the posts when baseball heats up. I’m in football mode right now though which is no good for a baseball blogger. Reds are somewhat going all-in for 2012, that’s the only thing I liked about the Sean Marshall for Travis Wood swap if you’re wondering...
Methodical tearing down and rebuilding of the old Cubs will certainly continue; 'I don't think we're done,' Epstein saidFor those who missed Theo Epstein's message when he took over baseball operations, here it is again after the Cubs traded proven reliever Sean Marshall to the Reds for a semi-proven starter and two minor leaguers Friday:
In addition to acquiring left-handed reliever Sean Marshall in a trade with the Cubs on Friday, the Reds claimed right-handed reliever Josh Judy off waivers from the Indians.

I wouldn’t trade Travis Wood or Dave Sappelt straight up for one season of Sean Marshall, who I really like. I am sorry, but relievers simply aren’t worth that kind of value. To add in Ronald...
The Cubs end up getting OF Dave Sappelt and INF Ronald Torreyes along with LHP Travis Wood for LHP Sean Marshall. Torreyes sounds like the most intriguing prospect of the group, but not a bad haul for a reliever in my opinion.
