CINCINNATI (AP) -- A.J. Burnett remained undefeated against the Cincinnati Reds this season and Starling Marte hit a tiebreaking two-run triple to help the Pittsburgh Pirates salvage the finale of their three-game series with a 6-2 win on Sunday. Neil Walker hit a two-run home run and All-Star center fielder Andrew McCutchen added a solo shot as Pittsburgh snapped Cincinnati's win streak at five and cut the Reds lead in the National League Central Division to 4 1-2 games. Burnett (14-3) allowed just one hit after the first inning and retired 18 straight batters before yielding two walks with two outs in the ninth. He allowed three hits and two runs with three walks and seven strikeouts in 8 2-3 innings to improve to 3-0 in three starts against the Reds this season. Joel Hanrahan got the final out for his 32nd save. The Reds went into the game with 22 wins in their last 25 games and 15 of their last 16. They are still 16-4 since All-Star first baseman Joey Votto left the lineup with a torn meniscus in his left knee that required surgery. Jay Bruce doubled in the first, but Pittsburgh took a 2-1 lead in the second on Walker's 12th homer of the season, a two-run shot that tied Walker's season high. After Stubbs tied the score with his 14th homer of the season, the Pirates went back ahead on Marte's two-run triple that followed singles by Gaby Sanchez and Clint Barmes. Homer Bailey (9-7) allowed nine hits and four runs with one walk and three strikeouts in 4 2-3 innings on Sunday. McCutchen led off the ninth against Logan Ondrusek by tying his single-season career high with his 23rd homer of the season and first since July 17. NOTES: Reds 2B Brandon Phillips missed his fifth straight start with a strained left calf. ... The Pirates finished 6-4 on their longest road trip of the season. They open their longest homestand Monday with a four games against Arizona, the first of 11 in 11 days in Pittsburgh. ... The Reds open a seven-game road trip in Milwaukee on Monday. They've won nine consecutive road games, the longest active streak in the National League and the team's longest since a 10-game run from July 27 through Aug. 13, 2005.

A.J. Burnett's amazing success

For most of A.J. Burnett's tenure with the Yankees, fans of that team usually called him some variation of A.J. "Freakin." Burnett. That team's fan base were so so frustrated so often that many ringing cheers rang out upon the trade of Burnett to the Pittsburgh Pirates on February 19 of this year. Those fans did not care that the Yankees agreed to pay a lot of Burnett...

A.J. Burnett Named NL Player of the Week

A.J. Burnett has been named the NL Player of the Week, after throwing two great starts last week. Burnett started with a complete game, one-hit shutout against the Chicago Cubs, striking out eight and walking two in the process. The right-hander carried a no-hitter in to the eight inning, before giving up a two-out single on a 3-2 pitch to Adrian Cardenas. Burnett followed that up...

Yankeetorial: OK, all you AJ Burnett bashers, let's celebrate the magic that is Diego Moreno and Exicardo Cayones

AJ Burnett is killing for Pittsburgh. This weekend, he went 8 2/3 innings to beat Cinncinati, keeping the Pirates afloat in the race. He's 14 and 3. We're paying much of his salary. But cheer up, AJ critics: We didn't just trade him for refried beans. We got Diego Moreno and Exicardo Cayones. And because you were so happy about that trade - REMEMBER HOW DELIGHTED...

Why New York Yankees fans are learning about karma

A. J. Burnett (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Whoever said that AJ Burnett couldn’t pitch should be putting their foot back in their mouth, as he could very well win the NL CY Young this season. I have always been a Burnett fan since his days with the Florida Marlins; so I was thrilled when the Yankees signed him in 2009 and went on to win the World Series that season. Burnett had his...

Pirates Notebook: Burnett Throws Another Gem; McCutchen, Walker Tie Career Highs in Homers

A.J. Burnett took the mound at 84 pitches in the ninth inning at Great American Ball Park looking to notch his second straight complete game for Pittsburgh. Reds going for the sweep, and the kill
