Confidence was something both the Reds and Jack Hannahan could use on Saturday -- and it was something they both got in the first inning on Saturday as the Reds third baseman had a two-run two-out single that gave Cincinnati a lead en route to a 8-3 victory over St. Louis. For the second straight night the Cardinals got on the board in the first inning but this time they were limited to a single run as opposed to four in Friday’s 13-3 loss. The Reds had a chance to get back in the game with two runners on in the first but came up empty. On Saturday the Reds had two on in the first with first base open when St. Louis manager Mike Matheny elected to intentionally walk Jay Bruce to get to Hannahan who was hitting .212 in sporadic playing time this season. Hannahan hadn't had an RBI in nearly a month but he hit a 2-2 changeup from Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook up the middle and over the outstretched arm of Cardinals shortstop Pete Kozma to give the Reds the 2-1 lead in the first. "It was big. As far as yesterday being down 5-0 and then coming into today and getting down and putting a run up on the board and it was good to come back in and get the boys going with the big hit" Hannahan said. Hannahan's hit not only took a load off the third baseman's shoulders but also starter Tony Cingrani's. "When I gave up that one and I was pretty angry at myself and Jack gets that big hit and we're up 2-1 and I've just got to hold them" said Cingrani who needed 30 pitches to get through the first inning. Cingrani held the Cardinals scoreless the next four innings as the Reds scored two more with two outs on a two-run homer by Devin Mesoraco in the fourth and a Brandon Phillips RBI double in the fifth. It was only then with his team holding a 5-1 lead that Cingrani found his way into more trouble loading the bases on two hits and a walk without recording an out when Dusty Baker came out to the mound to end the left-hander's night.
