Cincinnati Reds outfielder Chris Heisey was slated to begin a rehab assignment last night with the team’s Triple-A affiliate. However, he told reporters – including Mark Sheldon of MLB.com – prior to last night’s game that he suffered a minor setback to his strained right hamstring. Heisey said that the setback occurred during batting practice on Wednesday. During the session, he did some sliding, as he wanted to prove to himself that he could do so and remain pain free. While no sharp pains resulted, he did experience a little soreness that caused his rehab to be pushed back. "During batting practice [Wednesday], I did some sliding," Heisey said. "I told them I wanted to make sure I could slide pain free. I did some and didn't have any sharp pains or anything, but it was just a little soreness in there. After what happened last time, I've got to know that I am ready. I don't feel that quite yet." It’s not the first setback Heisey has faced during his current rehab. Three weeks ago during his first rehab game, Heisey suffered a setback while attempting to make a catch. At this point, there is no timeframe for Heisey’s return, as he simply said he plans to play it safe. "I was sitting there on the off-day [Thursday] and I was unsure," Heisey said. "I want to be sure when I go that I'm going to be able to play the game and not worry too much about it. … I'll be back out there as soon as I can. It's frustrating, for sure. I've never been out near this long before." Prior to hitting the DL, Heisey was off to a slow start for the Reds. The 28-year-old had hit .173/.195/.293 with five extra-base hits in 79 plate appearances. Follow @mlbinjurynews Looking for fantasy baseball advice?

Video: Watch Joey Votto flip the ball behind his back to record out

Your browser does not support iframes. Joey Votto pulled off a defensive gem during Saturday's 4-2 win over the rival Cardinals that even teammate and multiple Gold Glove winner Brandon Phillips could be proud of. The play came in the top of the seventh inning when St. Louis hitter Matt Carpenter bounced a groundball down to Votto at first base. Votto charged, scooped...

Series preview: Cards face second-place Reds in Cincinnati

ST. LOUIS -- Even though the Reds went 19-7 in May, they drew a near-Marlins like crowd of only 18,498 when they returned home Monday night. Maybe Cincinnati fans were holding out for this weekend. The Cardinals are coming to town for the first time this season. Much larger crowds are expected for the three-game set between the rivals. Not so long ago, you could have inserted the...

Reds Respond with a Huge Saturday Night Win over Cardinals

[Box Score] [Cincinnati.com] I missed a lot of this game for date night, but I returned home for the climactic ending. And thus brings another point, FOX has gone and pulled a fast one that we actually like. I believe FOX did Saturday Night Baseball (aka Baseball Night in America) telecasts last year, but now they’re a regularly scheduled item. While I miss the afternoon Saturday...

Redbirds feasting on scoring chances

CINCINNATI Mike Leake was one out away from getting out of a precarious predicament in the fourth inning Friday night in the opener of a three-game series against NL Central leading St. Louis. The Cardinals had runners on first and third but Leake struck out fan not-so-favorite Yadier Molina for a second out. While hardly secure, Leake had to be breathing a little easier as David...

A recent timeline of the heated Reds-Cardinals rivalry

Get your popcorn ready, folks. The Redlegs and Redbirds hook up for another 3-game set this weekend at Great American Ball Park and thus, renew arguably the most intense modern day rivalry in all of Major League Baseball. While it may be well known around the league that these two clubs don't like one another, it's often unclear to outsiders as to just why that is. If you...

Preview: Wainwright leads Cardinals against Reds

(AP) -- Brandon Phillips isn't shy about saying the St. Louis Cardinals are the best club in baseball, even though his Cincinnati Reds aren't far behind. Given how well Adam Wainwright and Mike Leake have pitched recently, Friday night's series opener in Cincinnati appears to be a pretty even matchup. The Cardinals (39-21) lead the Reds (36-24) by three games in the...

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds: Heated rivalry turns to Cincy

Now a full seven days into June, it is hard to believe that one would consider a three-game set a “big series” so early in the season, but that is exactly what the St. Louis Cardinals are facing as they travel to Cincinnati for the first time this season. The Cardinals, who have the league’s best record at 39-21, lead the Reds by just three games in the National League Central...
