GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) -- Chris Young hit two doubles to lead an Arizona Diamondbacks split squad to an 8-7 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. Adam Eaton had a double and triple, driving in three runs for the Diamondbacks. Left-hander Tyler Skaggs, the Diamondbacks top pitching prospect, allowed one run on two hits over three innings. Scott Rolen hit a three-run opposite field home run. The home run was encouraging for Cincinnati. Rolen's left shoulder is healthy after surgery. He was limited to 65 games last season and hit five home runs in 2011 after hitting 20 in 2010. Mike Leake allowed a run on two hits and a walk in four innings, his longest outing of the spring. Rolen hit his first home run of the spring off Joe Patterson. Arizona scored seven runs off Clay Zavada and Sam LeCure in the fifth inning.

D-backs' Gibson has multiple lineup options

GOODYEAR, Ariz. Kirk Gibson cautions not to read too much into spring training lineups and positioning, as he knows from personal experience. One spring, Detroit manager Sparky Anderson played Gibson exclusively in center field. On opening day, Gibson was in right. So while shortstop Willie Bloomquist led off and left fielder Jason Kubel hit fourth in the Diamondbacks' 8-7...

Cozart shines as Reds hammer the Indians

A green Reds' hat? That ain't right. It's just spring training but it's always nice to beat those rivals from the north and that's just what the Reds (7-9-1) did in convincing fashion on Saturday, beating the Indians (4-9) by a score of 9-2. Bronson Arroyo had his best outing of the spring, while Zack Cozart led the way offensively. Now let's take...

Janish fighting to make Reds' roster

What a difference a year makes for Paul Janish -- and not in a good way. Janish was the starting shortstop last spring. Edgar Renteria was brought in to back him up but the job was Janish's. Janish did lose the job. He was hitting .227 without a home run on July 7 when the Reds optioned him to Class AAA Louisville and brought up Zack Cozart. Cozart was deemed the shortstop...

MLB Preview 2012: Cincinnati Reds

I am a really big fan of the Cincinnati Reds. Not a real fan, just someone that thinks they’re going to be good. They have a young squad full of bombers and speed. They have some talented young pitching and they have a manager that likes to destroy young arms. What’s not to like? Like Tony LaRussa, Dusty Baker, wins just about everywhere he goes, in spite of himself. He practically...

Tomko still solid after 14 years in majors

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The Tomko family owns a legacy in Cleveland that has nothing to do with Cincinnati Reds pitcher Brett Tomko, nor does it have anything to do with baseball. It is all about basketball -- the NBA, the Cleveland Cavaliers. When Tomko's father, Jerry, was 29 he entered a contest to provide a nickname for the new NBA franchise in Cleveland. "He not only...

Reds 9, Indians 2

Ubaldo Jimenez gave up six runs in less than four innings, including a long leadoff homer by Brandon Phillips, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Cleveland Indians 9-2 Saturday. The shot far beyond the left-field fence was tracked down by a youngster in a stretch of sand near a roadway. Jimenez...

A surprise no more, Arizona looks to contend again

A year ago, the Arizona Diamondbacks were baseball's surprise team, going from worst to first to win the NL West. This year, the surprise will be if they aren't contenders again. A strong young rotation, vastly improved bullpen and a gritty style that led to a major league-best 48 come-from-behind wins propelled the Diamondbacks to the division title and a near-miss in...
