According to the NY Times,  Sandy Alderson, the general manager of the Mets, suggested the loss of a first-round pick would be too steep a price for the team to consider signing Michael Bourn, the best outfielder left on the free-agent market. If they signed Bourn, a speedy 30-year-old center fielder, the Mets would be forced to give up the 11th overall pick of the draft as compensation. During an interview Sunday with MLB Network Radio, Alderson said the Mets had been “very reluctant to consider that,” as it would undermine their vision for the future. He added, “The blueprint here is to rebuild the farm system at the same time that we try to be competitive and for us to lose a first-round pick would be counter to that approach.” The top 10 picks of the draft are protected, and the Mets were originally supposed to have the 10th overall pick this year. But they were bumped down a spot when the Pittsburgh Pirates failed last year to sign their top draft selection. ...

The debate rages on whether or not the Mets should forfeit their first-round pick, the #11 selection overall, in order to sign free agent Michael Bourn. Those in favor of the move point out that Bourn would address a major need for the Mets while those opposed think the club is unlikely to contend while Bourn would be good and that the club would be better off continuing its youth...

The Dodgers may not be done shopping yet folks. Rumors are starting to surface that the Dodgers have interest in Michael Bourn and Scott Rolen. The Plan: Mets Are Going To “Half & Half” It In 2013

The Mets intend to make a second visit soon to watch free-agent reliever Brian Wilson throw, Sandy Alderson told ESPN’s Jim Bowden. Wilson is recovering from Tommy John surgery. Alderson previously has acknowledged Wilson threw only 20 pitches during the first session for the Mets, on Jan. 12 at UCLA, and that his velocity was substandard at that time. Sandy also explained his...

How Does Michael Bourn Play Into The Mets Endgame?

The Mets community is having a field day with Michael Bourn these days. I figured I might as well chime in too. First, let’s establish the basics: The Mets will (most likely) lose the 11th pick in the 2013 first-year player draft if they sign Bourn. Michael Bourn is a Scott Boras client. If the Mets were to sign Bourn, he’s probably going to get a deal in the five-year range...

Mets Met With Bourn In Houston

When I’m wrong I’m always the first to admit it. It’s a habit I picked up while serving my country and learning how some mistakes, no matter how slight, could have significant ramifications on the rest of my company, division, etc. Better to get it out of the way so that we can reassess, readjust and reengage. That said, you always go with whatever your best intel is at the...

On Sunday, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson told MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM that pitching coach Dan Warthen would be watching Brian Wilson pitch within the next few days. The Mets already watched Wilson throw earlier this month, but did not deem the former Giants closer worthy of a major league contract just yet. That could change as it becomes increasingly apparent that Alderson...
