Clemson catcher Garrett Boulware managed to hit just 14 points above the Mendoza Line with two doubles and two runs batted in during his freshman season with the Tigers in 2012. But that didn’t last long.
Now the most feared hitter in his lineup after a breakout sophomore campaign, Boulware has been selected to represent the Tigers in the TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby taking place Wednesday night at 8 p.m. on ESPN, the Clemson TIgers Official Athletics Site reported Wednesday afternoon.
Boulware, who hit .533 with nine long balls as a senior at T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson, South Carolina, verified that potential in 2013 by mashing a team-high nine home runs and 45 RBI to go along with a .308 average.
The 6-1, 210-pounder clubbed five of his eight dingers at home despite playing in the notoriously pitcher-friendly and cavernous dimensions of Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
