Update, 4:59 pm: D’Backs beat reporter Nick Piecoro chimed in just after the initial wave and reports that the trade talks are “off base.”
According to a tweet Pedro Gomez of ESPN, the Phillies and Diamondbacks are discussing a Justin Upton for Cliff Lee swap. However, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports writes Arizona is not actively seeking this deal.
There are few details at this point, but we know that Lee makes $25 million in each of the next three season and has a $12.5 million buyout in 2016. Upton’s contract is very favorable, at just a shade under $10 million in 2013, then $14.25 million in 2014 and $14.5 million in 2015.
Moving Lee would kill the depth of the Phillies rotation, which seems to be strong on paper, but it an unknown as Roy Halladay looks to return to form following an injured shoulder last season.
Gaining Upton would give the Phillies a powerful, young, right-handed bat for the middle of the order – and one that comes very cheap considering the market.
We’ll have details as they become available…
