The Philadelphia Phillies are considering adding troubled free-agent outfielder Delmon Young, as the team continues to seek a corner outfielder, according to CSNPhilly.com. Amaro, who typically doesn't discuss free-agency matters, acknowledged that Young is a possibility. "We've kicked around a lot of stuff," he told CSNPhilly. "He's among them." The first overall pick in the 2003 draft by the Tampa Bay Rays, Young finished second in American League rookie of the year voting in 2007. Since, his career has been hurt by poor on-field performances and off-the-field controversy. He was suspended for seven days by Major League Baseball for yelling anti-Semitic slurs outside of a New York hotel in April 2012. He apologized and completed a counseling and community service program. Amaro wouldn't specifically discuss Young's off-field issues, but spoke in general terms regarding players who have "baggage." "We have to keep o...

Phillies Roy Halladay Already Throwing at Spring Training Facility

After his injury-plagued 2012 season, Roy Halladay has every reason to want to get out and start pitching early.  He has done just that in ramping up his offseason throwing programs.  Halladay has already arrived at the Philadelphia Phillies spring training facility in Florida to begin throwing. Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia says Halladay threw 30 pitches yesterday at the...

Rays Rumors: Tampa Bay Eyeing DH Candidates

The Tampa Bay Rays could continue to be in the market for another bat, and they are expected to target either a designated hitter or outfielder, according to Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times. The DH spot is wide open, and a free agent seems likely, though the money, of course, will be a factor as the payroll is already in the $55 million range (plus incentives) and thus...

Big Money if Delmon Young Makes Weight

Young can receive up to $600,000 in bonuses if he makes weight for the Phillies. A lot has been said about Delmon Young, including but not limited remarks about his rapid weight gain since becoming a Major Leaguer. Now, Young has incentive to see a new him the next time he looks in the mirror. The 2012 ALCS MVP will face six random weigh-ins from the Phillies – each time he makes...

Delmon Young will receive $600,000 from Phillies if he can drop some pounds

It isn't unusual for players to have odd incentives sprinkled into their contracts. Some of these include performance-based goals. Others may include things such as loyalty, staying out of trouble, etc. But what about a $600,000 incentive for losing weight? This is precisely one of the incentives included in the contract of new Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Delmon Young. Philly...

Phillies Sign Delmon Young

Of course they did. Last week, Jeff wrote about “What Delmon Young Was”, and he closed with these two paragraphs: I haven’t yet figured out how Delmon Young hit that pitch for a home run. If you watch Young’s highlight videos, you’ll see similar batted balls that come off the bat faster than it seems like they should. That raw talent of Young’s hasn’t deteriorated with...

The Phillies announced Tuesday they had signed Young to a one-year, $750,000 contract, which a source said can become worth $3.5 million based on roster and performance bonuses. Young has had many issues both on and off the field. A most recent incident occurred last April in New York, where police arrested him on a…

Young to get paid for making weight

Delmon Young has some incentive to lay off the desserts: He can earn $600,000 based on his weight this season. Young's $750,000, one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies allows him to earn an additional $2.75 million in bonuses. The deal for the AL championship series MVP, announced Tuesday, calls for him to get on a scale on six occasions to be chosen by the team....

Real tweets from real people: Delmon Young is a Phillie

Earlier today, I wrote about how Delmon Young would be a terrible fit with the Phillies. Sure enough, about an hour and a half later, Young signed with the Phillies for one year and $750,000, and GM Ruben Amaro said he imagined Young as the team's every day right fielder. Twitter went crazy soon after the signing, with about 95% of people echoing the same viewpoint I had earlier...
