Soriano to Philly? Forget it. (MLB)
According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, the Phillies have discussed trading Domonic Brown to the Cubs for Alfonso Soriano. Jayson Stark of ESPN chimed in on twitter and said it’s a long shot to happen.
Thank the Lord.
Soriano is owed $36 million over the next two seasons and is 36-years-old (37 in January). He still has a little bit of power left in his bat, but for how long? How would this deal make any sense whatsoever, unless the Phillies are that low on Brown they’re willing to deal him for an aging left fielder with an albatross of a contract.
Even if Ruben Amaro were to get the Cubs to chip in all the money left on Soriano’s deal, it would be a mistake. The report from Heyman says the Cubs would throw in $26 million. Not enough.
And that’s no knock on Soriano, this just wouldn’t be a smart deal for the Phillies.
Let’s hope this proves to be very, very false.
