Mlb-may-pirates-dodgers
The Red Sox already bolstered their bullpen by adding Koji Uehara, but the club might not be done adding arms to the equation. The Sox are believed to have interest in Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan, according to CBSSports’com’s Jon Heyman. The Dodgers, who have been dropping cash like nobody’s business this offseason, are reportedly also interested in the 6-foot-4 right-hander. Los Angeles seems like a logical destination considering its surplus of starting pitching. As Heyman points out, Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang are available, as the Dodgers traded for Josh Beckett in August and signed the much coveted Zack Greinke this offseason. Heyman reports that the Pirates are considering trading Hanrahan because the recently re-signed Jason Grilli could serve as the team’s closer, and Pittsburgh is aiming to add starting pitching. The Red Sox might be able to offer a package that includes multiple players, including a young pitcher. ESPN.com also reports that the Sox and Pirates have ha...

Joel Hanrahan Suddenly in Demand Among Relievers, But Numbers Indicate Player in Decline

As the Major League Baseball offseason approaches the end of the calendar year, Old Mother Hubbard’s cupboard is getting pretty bare. Actually, that’s not exactly accurate. There are a surprising number of solid second-tier players still on the board — namely Nick Swisher, Cody Ross and Michael Bourn — particularly in the outfield. However, as teams retool for 2013, with...

First Pitch: Thoughts on Liriano, Hanrahan, the Rotation, and the Payroll

Some quick hits tonight in the aftermath of the Francisco Liriano deal. I was on the road most of the day today, and had a lot of time to think about the fallout from this deal. **I mentioned earlier that I felt the Francisco Liriano deal was a good risk for the Pirates to take. I was on TribLIVE Radio this afternoon further discussing the deal.  Liriano is a great gamble for the...

Rumor Mill: Trading Andre Ethier & signing Michael Bourn + trading for Joel Hanrahan

Nowhere to start here but with Andre Ethier rumors, right? Well, last time we left off on this rumbling, I was tackling a scenario where Ethier gets dealt and the Dodgers sign Nick Swisher, but there was one other frequently brought up possibility: Michael Bourn. The Dodgers could pursue free agent center fielder Michael Bourn if they trade Andre Ethier, Rosenthal writes. Bourn is...

On Tuesday morning, the Red Sox officially signed former Orioles and Rangers pitcher Koji Uehara to a one year deal worth a little over four million. Uehara adds a lot of versatility to the Boston pen and is expected to pitch regularly in the seventh or eighth inning if fully healthy. The addition of [...]

Koji Uehara Will Bolster Red Sox’ Bullpen, But Biggest Improvements Must Come From Within

While Koji Uehara is not the answer to all of the Red Sox’ problems, he will go a long way toward stabilizing the Boston bullpen. The true stability of the unit, however, relies largely on the shoulders of those hurlers already in house. The Red Sox’ 2012 pitching were well-documented, and they were ultimately a big reason — perhaps the biggest — for the team’s disappointing...
