The Red Sox have reportedly added a left-handed reliever to the organization. The Sox signed lefty Matt Maloney to a minor league deal, according to Baseball America’s Matt Eddy. Maloney, a third-round pick of the Phillies in 2005, underwent Tommy John surgery back in July, so he’s not ready to begin pitching in games just yet. When he is ready, the 29-year-old will likely serve as some additional organizational depth. Maloney was originally a starter before eventually being converted to a reliever. He started seven games with the Reds in 2009, going 2-4 with a 4.87 ERA. In his career, Maloney is 5-9 with a 5.74 ERA in 31 big league appearances (11 starts). The 6-foot-4 lefty, who attended the University of Mississippi, actually has a somewhat interesting back story, especially as it pertains to this year. Maloney was once dealt to the Reds by the Phillies in 2007 in exchange for Kyle Lohse, who remains the top free-agent pitcher on the open market. Maloney made nine relief appearances with the Twins last season. He went 1-0 with an 8.18 ERA in 11 innings. Have a question for Ricky Doyle?
