The Red Sox may soon have to decide just how much they covet Mike Napoli. The Sox have reportedly expressed interest in Napoli this offseason, but according to ESPN’s Jim Bowden, the veteran slugger is seeking a four-year deal. That could toss a wrench into Boston’s plans, as Napoli is reportedly meeting with the Mariners, who could be willing to give him the fourth year he’s looking for. Napoli would likely serve primarily as a first baseman if signed by the Red Sox, while he may have an opportunity to remain behind the plate if he signs with the Mariners. That could potentially play a factor in the 31-year-old’s decision, although he has expressed a willingness to play first if the right opportunity presents itself. Napoli is coming off a down year in which he hit .227 with 24 home runs and 56 RBIs in 108 games. He put together an impressive season in 2011, though, hitting .320 with 30 home runs and 75 RBIs while helping to guide the Rangers to a World Series appearance. Mike Napo...

Mike Napoli May Not Be Marquee Free Agent, But He’s Likely Best Fit for Red Sox’ First Base Needs

Have you ever saved up for something for a really long time, only to smash open the piggy bank, run out the door and find out that what you wanted isn’t there anymore? That’s sort of where the Red Sox are this free agent season, where they’ve cleared a ton of cap space but don’t have much of a market to go spending in. They want to make wise choices, and they want to contend...

Mike Napoli Rumors: Mariner and Red Sox Trying to Land the Free Agent Catcher

Both the Boston Red Sox and the Seattle Mariners are serious about landing free agent Mike Napoli.  Napoli became a free agent when the Texas Rangers decided against even giving him a qualifying offer.  Now the All-Star catcher is seeking a four-year deal, and it seems the Mariners may be more interested in giving that many years than the Red Sox. According to ESPN's Jim...

Jonny Gomes Jokes About Fenway Park, Says ‘All They Did Here Was Lose’ (Video)

When the Oakland A’s came to visit the Red Sox this past season, most eyes were on Josh Reddick, who had exploded for the A’s since his trade from Boston. But outfielder Jonny Gomes, who was reportedly signed by the Red Sox this week, was also getting a preview of his next baseball home — whether he knew it or not. Gomes and Reddick put on the headsets at Fenway Park for a...

If I Must Own A James Loney Card....

I don't own many James Loney cards, but when I do, they're not cards I seek out. My first ever trade netted me a surprise Loney auto - my only signature of his - and I have a few base cards and the like lying around. However, today's card is one I'm more than happy to own, and it prominently features the former Dodger bust.Of course, as you've probably already...

What Jonny Gomes Means to the Red Sox

Yesterday, the Boston Red Sox reportedly added another player in their rebuilding effort.  Susan Sussler of the San Francisco Chronicle first reported the details of the contract, and Gomes is expected to receive a two-year, $10 million deal.  The signing is just another move to realign the clubhouse's passion and desire to win with the front office's goals.  Things went...

Redsocks snagging Jonny Gomes

Now and then, despite all the pain and suffering in the world, the political polarity that threatens our nation, the rising sea levels and catastrophic storms, you get a good feeling about the future. That's how I felt yesterday, as I gave thanks for Boston.  Somehow, when Team John Henry last summer sent the Billion Dollar Odd Lots & Overruns Outlet to LA, I didn't see...

Happy Gomesgiving

So it ain’t quite like that Thanksgiving past, when Theo and crew broke biscuits with the Schilling family. But the signing of Jonny Gomes reminds us that baseball is moving ever-closer, and we just gotta trust that Ben, like Galactus, has some sort of master plan that hopefully doesn’t include the Earth being torn part [...]

Black Friday musings

-Buck Showalter has been voted Manager of the Year by the Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Good for Buck, he deserves the love and the hardware. It is unfortunate that he came up short in the nationwide vote but Bob Melvin’s team did end up winning the AL West, even if they did get a ton of help from a Rangers team that folded in the last month. ...
