Credit: Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE As the Miami Marlins continue to dwell in the basement of the NL East, multiple teams have expressed interest in their players – most notably 30-year-old right-hander Ricky Nolasco. Jayson Stark of ESPN.com is reporting that the Yankees and Orioles are leading the pack. According to the report, a scout was quoted as saying “I think he’d be a great addition for somebody, as a No. 3 or 4 [starter]. He’s very similar to what Anibal Sanchez was last year. He’s not a 1 or a 2. But he’s a veteran guy who can go out and spin seven innings, and do it, I think, for a contending team.” Although the Yankees already have a solid rotation and some guys waiting in the wings – Ivan Nova and Michael Pineda – a trade for Nolasco would only boost their staff. Since Andy Pettitte will probably need rest here and there, having an extra pitcher might be a good idea to have. Nolasco will be a free agent at season’s end, so the Marlins most likely won’t resign him. So far in 2013, he’s 3-7 with a 3.80 ERA and has a 72/22 K/BB ratio. His best season came in 2008, when he went 15-8 with a 3.52 ERA. Since then, however, he’s been a mediocre pitcher up until this season. As the old saying goes, “you can never have too much pitching.” If the Yankees feel Nolasco can help them, he would be worth trading for. He probably won’t cost much considering he’d be a hired gun for the rest of the year, so a mid-level prospect or two could get a deal done. As the trade deadline approaches in about a month and a half, stay tuned for more info and rumors.
