Baseball's hot stove talk may be about to be stoked with a firesale. Multiple news outlets reported Tuesday the Miami Marlins are preparing to send shortstop Jose Reyes, pitcher Josh Johnson and three other high-priced players to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays also would get pitcher Mark Buehrle, catcher John Buck and center fielder Emilio Bonifacio. In return, the Marlins would get shortstop Yunel Escobar and prospects infielder Adeiny Hechavarria, right-hander Henderson Alvarez, left-hander Justin Nicolino outfielder Jake Marisnick. The trade of some of the team's biggest talent would come one season after Marlins had signed a number of high-priced free agents, including Reyes and manager Ozzie Guillen, entering the first year of their new stadium. However, the Marlins finished last in the National League East division with a 69-93 record, 29 games behind division winner Washington. Guillen was fired Oct. 23. The deal also would set up the Blue Jays as one of...

Miami Marlins’ mega deal: disgusting

It is, to a fan, the worst part of supporting a team.  Two dreaded words: fire sale.  It’s when a team trades away all their superstars way below market value to save money.  And, if you happen to be a fan of the Miami Marlins, you’ve been hit again.  The Marlins, perhaps the inventor of the fire sale, traded away Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, John Buck, and Emilio...

Blue Jays on verge of acquiring Josh Johnson, Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle?

The Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly on the verge of acquiring right handed pitcher Josh Johnson, left hander Mark Buehrle and short stop Jose Reyes....

Blue Jays, Marlins Proposed Blockbuster Trade Causes Quite a Stir on Twitter

The Miami Marlins made a huge offseason splash heading into the 2012 season, signing players Jose Reyes, Heath Bell and Mark Buehrle. After a depressing season that didn’t provide the results the organization, players and fans were hoping for, the Marlins have already made the biggest news of this offseason, agreeing to trade Josh Johnson, Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Emilio Bonifacio to...

Traded Marlins Affected By More Than Tax Rates

The Marlins and Blue Jays agreed to a blockbuster trade earlier this week that sent Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Josh Johnson to Toronto. There are clear tax ramifications for everyone involved in the trade, and as an accountant who works in this field and consults with players and agents, I find it very interesting on a number levels. However, what makes it more interesting than...

Miami Marlins: Irrelevant Again

The Miami Marlins made a big splash last offseason by bringing in Ozzie Guillen as manager and signing big name free agents Jose Reyes, Heath Bell and Mark Buehrle. Needless to say all those players are now not a part of the Marlins. In a clear move to dump salary, the Marlins traded away Reyes, Buehrle and Josh Johnson to the Toronto Blue Jays for basically nothing. For a team...

4 Ridiculous Sports Trades of the Past Ten Years

Did you see the trade the Miami Marlins just pulled off with the Toronto Blue Jays? Good lord, they just got rid of their best (and most expensive) players, giving up guys like Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, and Josh Johnson, all for some unproven minor league prospects and underachieving major league players. With the lopsidedness of that trade, as well as just the pure depth of guys...

Jeffrey Loria, Marlins Continue Disgrace as Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, and Possibly Jose Reyes Appear Headed to Blue Jays

The Miami Marlins disgrace to baseball continues.   Two reports have surfaced that the Marlins are unloading even more of their talent.   First, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Marlins are letting teams know that "virtually everyone" is available.   Then, Jon Morosi of Fox Sports just reported that the Marlins are close to sending the Marlins' best...

Marlins have another fire sale, Giancarlo Stanton not pleased

Well, the Florida Miami Marlins have certainly perfected the art of the “fire sale.” The Marlins dumped shortstop Jose Reyes, pitchers Mark Buehrle and Josh Johnson, utility player Emilio Bonifacio and catcher John Buck in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night, successfully dumping approximately $165 million in salary in the process. Miami got shortstops Yunel Escobar...

Report: Marlins Wanted Will Middlebrooks, Felix Doubront, Xander Bogaerts in Discussions for Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson

The Red Sox weren’t completely surprised by the monster trade the Marlins and Blue Jays were working on Monday night. In fact, they were reportedly part of the discussions, too. Before the Marlins pulled the trigger with the Blue Jays, the Red Sox were making a push to acquire shortstop Jose Reyes and pitcher Josh Johnson in a deal, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports. But...
