The Philadelphia Phillies have signed reliever Mike Adams, according to multiple reports. According to multiple reports the Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to terms on a 3 year/$18 million deal with reliever Mike Adams. Adams has served primarily as an 8th inning setup man during his career, something the Phillies did not have last year. Experiments with Chad Qualls, Antonio Bastardo and a host of younger relievers failed to produce a stable 8th inning pitcher. The lack of a proven setup guy led to a number of late inning collapses. Mike Adams in his 8 year career has pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers, the San Diego Padres and the Texas Rangers. He is a career 18-15 with 2.28 ERA. Over the past 5 seasons, he has posted a 1.98 ERA. Adams has been on the Phillies radar in the past. The team tried to trade for the reliever a couple of times over the past couple of years, but was never able to get a deal done. Adams is 34 years old and coming off his least effective season in recent memory, posting a 5-3 record with a 3.27 ERA in 61 games. Even with those numbers, Mike Adams represents a significant upgrade for the Phillies. Adams had surgery this offseason to correct Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is caused by pressure on veins in the shoulder or collar bone. The pressure can be caused by an extra rib, or just simply not enough space to pass through the collar bone. Often, people with this disorder will experience numbness, swelling and tingling in the fingers. Adams is expected to be ready for Spring Training.
