Wouldn’t it be interesting if the Mets, in an effort to address their bullpen issues, choose to do so by targeting two of their least popular former relievers.  Disappointing might be a better word than interesting, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a possibility.  On Sunday afternoon it was reported that New York is one of half a dozen teams to express interest in Luis Ayala:

Ayala, who enjoyed a revival season of sorts with the Yankees last season (2-2, 2.09 ERA), failed to put up such numbers in his time with the Mets back in 2008 (9 saves, 5.50 ERA).

While Ayala might come at a decent prize, one player that is sure to command a much bigger salary is Francisco Rodriguez, with whom the Mets have apparently been in contact with:

I realize the team has to do their due diligence on all free agent relievers but a K-Rod reunion just seems so far fetched given his history with the team.  Still, the New York’s interest in him appears to be very real:

One thing the Mets can waive in front of a guy like K-Rod or even someone like Brad Lidge is an opportunity to come in and be the closer.  That’s something other suitors may not be willing to offer and could be a big bargaining chip as the Winter Meetings progress.  In three years with New York Rodriguez saved 83 games in 98 opportunities (85% success rate) while accumulating a 9-10 record and a 3.04 ERA. No word on whether or not Armando Benitez or Aaron Heilman have been contacted for another go around in Queens.

Rumor: Yankees 1 of 6 Teams in on Luis Ayala

The Yankees are interested in bringing back reliever Luis Ayala, but they are not alone. According to Jim Bowden of ESPN XM radio, the Yankees are among six teams interested in signing the reliever. Over the past few years, Brian Cashman has done a great job putting together a bullpen and a large part of that has been signing a ton of relievers and hoping that one or two pan out...

Mets crumbling under Wilpons' debts

Among the events in Mets history that will live in infamy, Jose Reyes' defection to the Marlins ranks close to the top -- right there with the trade that sent Tom Seaver to the Reds in 1977. Yes, it's true, Reyes is leaving of his own free will, signing a wildly overpriced six-year, $106 million contract. But his absence will be no less traumatic to Mets fans than Seaver...

Rumor: Jorge Posada wants to join the Miami Marlins

It seems as if Jorge Posada is determined to play next season. First we heard that he reached out to the Mets, although both sides denied that (typical) and now we hear that he would like to play for the Marlins, according to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated. This is a fit in the sense that Posada lives in Miami in the offseason and the Marlins are looking to add significant money...

Mets’ Front Office Discuss Plans For 2012 Season And Beyond

On Wednesday, Sandy Alderson, Paul DePodesta, John Ricco and J.P. Ricciardi were on hand at Citi Field to discuss their plans for the 2012 season and beyond as they get ready for the Winter Meetings that begin tomorrow. Here are some of the comments they made: Sandy Alderson: We are committed to a winning team and we want you to be proud of our team. We want what YOU want, but...

Terry Collins on the state of the Mets

Terry Collins spoke with reporters and, gathering information from this report by Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, said the following: Angel Pagan will probably be the leadoff hitter. Daniel Murphy would be next in line to hit leadoff. Tejada will probably not hit leadoff to limit the pressure (being Reyes’ successor). Daniel Murphy is the projected second baseman. But, Justin...

Things Sandy Alderson Says

I just read the complete transcript of Sandy Alderson’s press conference last night courtesy of ESPN New York. I feel like I’ve been sandbagged. Although I have a problem with a lot of things he said last night, my biggest issues were with these two items… What would be the message to Mets fans about 2012 if they watch what the Marlins are doing, what the Nationals...

First Big Free Agent Splash

There was no “decision” on ESPN. Mets fans aren’t burning jerseys in the streets. None of the billboards in Time Square are being ripped down. In fact, the news came quietly on a night when most sports fans were glued to the NFL or their Fantasy Football teams. But another star is coming to Miami. No offense to Joe Nathan or Heath Bell, but Jose Reyes was the first big name...

Future in the Past

And with that one tweet, it hits you. The thing that we've been preparing for during the better part of a year is finally here. Jose Reyes has left the New York Mets. He's on his way to the Miami Marlins, a franchise he once fought tooth and nail against (literally) on a six-year $106 million deal. It was a deal that the Mets had no interest in topping, matching, or even approaching...

Was Jose Reyes Worth The Money?

After writing previously that the Marlins might be spending on the wrong things after the Heath Bell signing, of course, the Marlins prove everyone wrong and go out and sign Jose Reyes to a pretty big deal: six years at $106 million guaranteed, with an option for a seventh year as the Marlins pay Reyes big time money for him to man the 6-hole into his age 35 season. The contract...

Hodges comes up short of HOF

Former Mets manager Gil Hodges has once again been denied entry to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. Members of the committee needed to appear on 12 of the 16 ballots. Hodges received nine votes.  The Veterans Committee voted in Ron Santo, who received 15 of 16 votes. Jim Kaat received 10 votes, Minny Minos also received nine and Tony Oiliva eight. In addition to managing...

Reyes Leaves Mets for Marlins' $106M Deal

Jose Reyes is taking his talents to South Beach. The superstar shortstop, who finally shook off chronic injuries and won a batting title with the Mets last season, has reportedly signed a six-year, $106 million contract with the Miami Marlins. The deal includes an option that could bring the package to $120 million, according to The Associated Press. The Marlins, who have dropped...

Vote: Should Mets have topped Miami’s offer for Reyes?
