Another Cubs Blog:
Wuertz ranks 12th in FIP (2.62) among all relievers with 30 or more innings pitched. He has a 4.4 K/BB ratio, which would be the best on the Cubs by quite a bit. It’s actually embarrassing to say who leads the Cubs relievers in K/BB ratio. Luis Vizcaino at 3 and he was gone early on. Kevin Gregg is next at 2.43.
The Cubs got Justin Sellers and some other guy I can’t remember from the A’s in return for Wuertz. I can’t remember the one guy’s name because he was just released and it appears as if Sellers opted out of the Cubs minor leagues or something. He’s in the Dodgers system and I don’t know why. He wasn’t traded. I can’t find anything about the Cubs releasing him so I guess he opted out. Good call too. He’s having the best season in his professional career.
For the record, the best FIP among relievers on the Cubs are all pitchers who are not on the roster (Waddell, Vizcaino, and Atkins). Yeah, sample size. I know. It’s still funny though. Guzman’s 3.91 FIP is the best among relievers on the Cubs with at least 20 innings pitched and it’s more than a run more than Wuertz’s FIP.
Good work, Cubs.
