I just read a great piece by Ben Shpigel of the New York Times. He discusses how Jerry Manuel views Jose Reyes as one of the emerging leaders on the team. Jerry Manuel sees no need to designate a captain when he has a capable group of players policing the Mets' clubhouse. That leadership core includes David Wright, Johan Santana, Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran. According to Manuel, it is poised to gain another member: Jose Reyes. Manuel mentioned that he expected Reyes to position the infielders, call defensive plays and anticipate strategic decisions. They are important responsibilities, and Manuel would not assign them to Reyes unless he felt that Reyes was ready. "No question," Manuel said, smiling. "He has to be." I think it would be such a big lift for this team if Reyes can really take a more active role in terms of leadership.
