Rick Porcello will not have to wait long to begin making his case for the Detroit Tigers’ No. 5 starter role. Porcello will start the Tigers’ Grapefruit League opener on Friday against the Atlanta Braves. Justin Verlander on Sunday. #Tigers — Chris Iott (@Chris_Iott) February 18, 2013 That setup is a boon for Tigers fans down in Lakeland — both Saturday and Sunday’s games are home contests for the Tigers, meaning Verlander’s first appearance will come in Joker Marchant Stadium. Detroit hosts the Blue Jays on Saturday, with the Phillies visiting Sunday. There’s no word yet how many innings those starters will throw or who else will enter the game after them. For comparison’s sake, Doug Fister tossed two no-hit innings in Detroit’s 2012 spring opener (also against the Braves), then was followed by seven different relievers in a 2-0 win. A two-inning window — or something around 35-40 pitches — seems to be a safe bet for the Tigers’ starters out of the gate.

The Detroit Tigers are excited and curious to see what rookie right-hander Bruce Rondon from Venezuela can do on the mound. The defending American League champions are giving Rondon a chance to be the teams opening day closer, but

Peralta enters camp slimmer, feeling quicker

LAKELAND, Fla. There were many who did not expect to see Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta back in Detroit after he batted .239 with 13 home runs and 63 RBI in 2012. The club could live with his limited defensive range as long as he was productive with the bat, but his second-half offensive swoon greatly diminished his value. Even when Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski opted...

Tigers' Brennan Boesch Tweaks Oblique, Is Day to Day

It used to be the hamstring that sidelined player after player.  In the 2010's there are two injuries "du decade"  that no team can seem to avoid...the Tommy John surgery spurring elbow ligament tear, and the ultra chic oblique strain.  The Tigers Brennan Boesch is the pool winner for first oblique problem of spring 2013. Boesch, heading into his fourth...

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Bruce Rondons first batting-practice pitching of spring training was Sundays main event. Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski, manager Jim Leyland and Hall of Famer Al Kaline all made sure to watch. On the adjoining field, American League MVP Miguel Cabrera sat on a bench and watched through two separate fences. Someone on the field where Cabrera was asked...

Another generation of Fielders on deck

LAKELAND, Fla. Just like their father, Jadyn and Haven Fielder love baseball. They wear his No. 28 on their junior-sized Detroit Tigers uniforms and are constantly playing pickup games or catch on any patch of vacant grass they can find at Marchant Stadium or the TigerTown complex. Sometimes they accompany their father, Prince, to batting practice to watch him swat balls into...

Verlander at 30 on same pace as Glavine

LAKELAND, Fla. Justin Verlander turns 30 on Wednesday, but it's just another birthday to the Tigers ace. I dont care about stuff like that, Verlander said. It doesnt really matter to me. However, there's something related to turning 30 that did interest Verlander. He's won 124 games at that relatively early age and aspires to be enshrined in Cooperstown someday. ...
