The Chicago Cubs will be hiring San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria as their next manager, according to multiple reports. The 51-year old Renteria has been the Padres' bench coach since 2011, and managed in the Marlins' and Padres' minor league systems nearly continuously from 1998 to 2007. Right from the getgo, the bilingual Renteria seemed like the candidate to beat in Chicago. He immediately jumped to the top of a list that included newly-hired Tigers manager Brad Ausmus, former Diamondbacks manager AJ Hinch, former Mariners manager Eric Wedge, Rays bench coach Dave Martinez, and former Indians manager Manny Acta. The Cubs also had interest in Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo, but Red Sox brass didn't allow Lovullo to interview with the club. Renteria will be Chicago's fourth manager in the last five seasons. Lou Piniella retired in August of 2010, and was replaced by third base coach Mike Quade. Quade was fired after the 2011 season and was replaced by Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum. After losing 197 games in two years under Sveum, the Cubs fired Sveum and began the hunt for a replacement. Thus, the hiring of Renteria was made. [follow]
