According to a report from ESPN, Robinson Cano announced earlier today that he has fired Scott Boras, his long-time agent. This comes at the start of the final season in Cano’s 6-year, $57 million contract that Boras negotiated for him. Although this news is somewhat shocking, the most surprising part of the announcement might just be who Cano’s new agent is. Cano will be the first athlete to sign with Roc Nation Sports, a new agency founded by Jay-Z through a partnership with Creative Artists Agency. This is obviously great news for the Yankees. Boras has a policy that is pretty much standard for all his clients: they are going to test the free agency waters. Cano, who is 30-years-old, is primed to receive a huge contract in the offseason. And under Boras, that could have come from any number of teams. This scenario is now much more unlikely. Cano will still get paid handsomely, but now it seems the chances of him signing an extension with the Yankees during the season is much more probable.
