Da Great White Hype:
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame held its annual inductions last week, and it highlighted the inclusions of RUN DMC, Jeff Beck, and the greatest band of all time, Metallica.
When I was in 6th grade, my family took in an exchange student from Spain named Alphonso. He was a cool dude who gave me a tape of "Master of Puppets." From then on I was hooked. Kirk Hammett was the reason I tried to learn a guitar. And when I got a book of tabs of Metallica songs, I realized I would never be able to play that crap and I should just use the only instrument any Metallica fan needs... the \m/devil's horns.
Metallica's gone through battles with addictions, deaths of Cliff Burton, their first bassist, haircuts, and three lineup changes..but they were the loudest, fastest, most attitude-driven band. Ever.
The reason why I like them so much is that their music is so heavy and dark, but melodic at the same time, making it both intriguing and appealing. The best bands and artists emulate this strategy--from 2pac to Nirvana.
Here are some of my favorite MetallicA songs:
The first time I heard Ride the Lighting, my friends and I were outside playing hockey listening to the radio. We just all stopped skating in my driveway and started banging our heads. The neighbours probably thought we were total badasses.
