Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton will undergo season-ending surgery to his shoulder and hip this week, MLB.com reported.

The surgery, which will repair a torn right labrum and damage in his hip, will take place on Friday, 10 days before his 39th birthday.

Helton was on the 15-day disabled list after the All-Star break, and he has played six games since then.

"We knew when I was on the DL that [the labrum] was torn, there was something wrong with the bone and then there was cartilage messed up," Helton told MLB.com. "I was going to give [playing] a shot. I wanted to finish the year, but it wouldn't have been the best outcome. If I wanted to play next year, it was best to go ahead and get it done so I can be ready for Spring Training."

The 2013 season will be the final year of his contract and he will earn $5 million.

Helton is batting .238 with seven homers and 37 RBIs. His previous lowest batting average for a season was .256 in 2010.

He played in 69 games in 2012, the fewest since he played 35 in his first season with the club in 1997.

Helton's injury issue is the latest bit of bad luck for the Rockies, who are on pace for their worst season in history.
