Rockies pitcher Alex White homered and Colorado finally solved a struggling Ryan Vogelsong, beating the San Francisco Giants 6-5 Monday night to snap a five-game losing streak. Buster Posey and Hunter Pence went deep for the Giants, who lost for only the second time in 10 road games. San Francisco's lead in the NL West was trimmed to five games over the idle Los Angeles Dodgers. Trailing 6-2, the Giants got a two-run homer from Posey in the seventh inning off reliever Rex Brothers and pulled within one in the eighth. Brandon Crawford drew a one-out walk from Matt Belisle, pinch-hitter Aubrey Huff singled and Angel Pagan followed with an RBI double, his third hit of the game. Belisle got out of the jam by retiring Marco Scutaro and Pablo Sandoval. Guillermo Moscoso (2-1) picked up the victory by working two innings, allowing one run on three hits. Rafael Betancourt pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 28th save in 33 chances. Colorado manager Jim Tracy was ejected in the bottom of ...

SF Giants Rumors: NL West Leader, MVP Posey, Vogelsong Downward Spiral, Etc.

The San Francisco Giants took 2-out-of-3 from the Dodgers over the weekend to extend their lead in the NL West to 5.5 games. They then flew to Colorado and dropped game 1 of the series to the Rockies. The lead in the NL West is now down to 5 games. Catcher Buster Posey is coming off back-to-back games where he is showing he’s MVP worthy in the National League. Sunday Posey was...

Colorado Rockies return home with end in sight

***For my regular audience (all three of you), I took a few days off from Rockies Review as I traveled to Minneapolis with friends to check out Target Field over the weekend. I always strive to cover every single game, and have come close to that in the four years that this blog has been in existence, but without the time or ability to watch the games live, or after the fact, I felt...

Giants' Bumgarner shows off BP power in a game

It has been a joke around the batting cage, especially when the San Francisco Giants are struggling on offense, that Madison Bumgarner ought to hit in the middle of the lineup. His BPs are pretty fabulous sometimes. And, sometimes, he carries that into games. Like Tuesday. Bumgarner got the biggest hit in the Giants' 9-8 victory, a 416-foot three-run homer that tied the...

Rockies' Tracy harshly criticizes catcher's defensive mistakes

Colorado Rockies rookie catcher Wilin Rosario wasn't supposed to play Monday. He was scheduled to get a night off after a difficult defensive weekend at Philadelphia that included a brutal Sunday, when he was charged with four passed balls. Rosario was going to get a chance to rest, regroup and get away from the action. Instead, he ended up pinch-running in the fourth inning...

Coors Field Tour Review – Denver, Colorado

Last week, I had the opportunity to do a behind the scenes tour of Coors Field, in Denver.  Actually, anyone can do the tour if you buy a ticket.  I bought a $7 ticket and I took a look at the stadium that is one mile above sea level. Coors Field is located in downtown Denver, near Interstate 25.  There is also a light rail station nearby so accessibility is provided for people...

Five and a Half Games Up

The Giants caught a huge break when it was announced earlier that Clayton Kershaw would not be making tonight’s start, and that Joe Blanton would be starting in his place. The Giants definitely lucked out in the opposing-team’s-injuries department: not to be forgotten was Matt Kemp‘s absence, which left Hanley Ramirez and number-eight hitter A.J. Ellis as the only legitimate...

Buster Posey Fights for his Pitch

There was a handful of crucially important series over this past weekend, and among them was Dodgers vs. Giants in San Francisco. The Dodgers came in four and a half games behind the Giants for first place in the NL West, and they were looking to make up ground in a hurry. They emerged five and a half games behind the Giants for first place, and according to Cool Standings, the Dodgers’...

Giants 9, Rockies 8

Madison Bumgarner hit a three-run homer on a night when he struggled on the mound and Brandon Belt drove in four runs, helping the San Francisco Giants hold on for a 9-8 win over the Colorado Rockies in rainy conditions Tuesday. Belt broke a tie in the fifth with a two-run double. He also brought in a run on a fielder's choice and added a solo homer for the NL West leaders,...

Giants 4, Dodgers 0

Barry Zito came through in one of the most important outings in his San Francisco tenure, pitching the NL West-leading Giants past the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0 on Sunday night to extend their division lead to 51/2 games. Hunter Pence hit a two-run double in the first inning that held up and Buster Posey homered in San Francisco's fifth win in the last six meetings of the rivalry...

The Phils win their day-night make-up doubleheader with the Rockies, sweeping the series in the process, winning by the scores of 3-2 and 7-4.

The Phils sweep their make-up doubleheader, sweeping the series in the process, as they defeat the Rockies by the score of 3-2 and 7-4. The Rockies took the lead in the first game of the twinbill in the second as, with two men on, and with two men out, DJ LeMathieu hits an RBI single, knocking in Wilin Rosario, who had started the inning off with a single, then stopped at second...

Rockies Catching Conundrum

The Colorado Rockies haven't had much go according to plan this season. One pleasant surprise this year has been the play of rookie catcher Wilin Rosario, who most thought would spell free agent acquisition Ramon Hernandez a few times a week while acclimating himself to the Majors.

Barry Zito Delivers Big Time for the San Francisco Giants

In September 2010 the San Francisco Giants were in a heart-stopping race to try and catch the San Diego Padres and somehow wrestle away a first place finish in the National League West. The pitching-rich Padres spent 128 of the first 145 games of that year firmly in 1st place and it looked like the Giants were running uphill. But in the final 17 games of the season San Diego would...

Giants-Rockies Preview

By winning a series against their closest NL West rival, the San Francisco Giants have their biggest division lead of the season. The Giants will look to tack on to that advantage beginning Monday night when they open a three-game road series against the Colorado Rockies. After taking two of three from the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco has opened a 5 1/2-game lead in the West...

Positioning The Playoff Advantages

At this point, there’s not much of a chance the Giants won’t be in the playoffs.  According to ESPN, they have a 98.5% chance, which is better than any team in the AL other than the Texas Rangers.  In fact, four of the five NL spots seem certain.  Washington’s officially in.  Cincinnati is leading the Central and has a 99.9% chance.  Even Atlanta, who have a barely-better...
