Juan Nicasio pitched out of trouble in much of his five-inning outing, allowing only Mike Moustakas' home run and leading the Colorado Rockies to a 7-2 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.
Nicasio, who finished the past two seasons on the disabled list, threw 46 strikes in 80 pitches, walking three and striking out four. He gave up three hits and pitched out of jams in the fourth and fifth innings with two runners on and one out.
Yorvit Torrealba and D.J. LeMahieu had run-scoring singles in the Rockies' three-run fifth inning. The other run scored on two-time Gold Glove left fielder Alex Gordon's throwing error.
Jeremy Guthrie, who started last season 3-9 with a 6.35 ERA with the Rockies before being traded July 20 to the Royals, allowed four runs - three earned - on eight hits and a walk in six innings.

Smith and Ventura among Royals' cuts
Left-hander Will Smith and rookie right-hander Yorando Ventura, candidates for Kansas City's final rotation slot, were among seven cuts made by the Royals before Monday night's game against the Texas Rangers.
Smith, 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA while holding opponents to a .179 batting average in four outings, was optioned to Triple-A Omaha. Ventura, a non-roster invitee who has...

2013 X-Factor: Colorado Rockies
Here's the 2013 Colorado Rockies in a nutshell: Tulowitzki, Gonzalez, Fowler, Rosario, the decaying corpse of Todd Helton, and a random sample of pitchers that may or may not struggle in 2013 and beyond. It's a pretty solid core of players, but there are still plenty of question marks on the team.
My x-factor for the Colorado Rockies in 2013 in Drew Pomeranz.

Kansas City Royals Season Preview: Dayton, Are We There Yet?
Last season was understood to be a growth year for the Kansas City Royals. They had a set of extremely talented position players prepared to take the spotlight after finally edging their way onto the big league club. They still lacked the pitching, but were an intriguing team given their relative inexperience and history of futility in Kansas City. Alas, 2012 turned out to...

Today, they posted the Royals Hall of Fame ballot online so fans could vote on it via Twitter. As you might expect, things have...
