A long strange Tuesday night began with a rare collapse by aching starter Jorge De La Rosa saw the Rockies stage an improbable rally lose the lead then come back — again — to beat the Giants 9-8. The telling blow was a leadoff ninth-inning solo homer by Michael Cuddyer into the left-field bleachers off Sergio Romo. It was Cuddyer's second homer of the night coming on the back of a three-run shot in the fifth that brought the Rockies back to life. In a game that took 4 hours 2 minutes Colorado's dormant road offense finally came to life. The Rockies smashed 14 hits — at AT&T Park. That's not a typo. Closer Rex Brothers finally ended the madness getting Marco Scutaro to ground out to second baseman DJ LeMahieu with two men out. The Giants who pounded seven Rockies pitchers for 14 hits knotted the game 8-8 in the eighth. They plated two runs on a single by Hunter Pence who finished the night with six RBIs. The Colorado reliever who coughed up the runs? Wilton Lopez who was supposed to be an efficient late-game reliever this season but instead has become a pinata with a 4.13 ERA. Strangely enough he got the victory. The victory snapped the Rockies' four-game losing streak and kept them from replacing the Giants as cellar dwellers in the National League West. The Rockies were down 6-0 after four innings so their rally matched their biggest comeback of the season. On April 16 in the second game of a doubleheader at Coors Field they rallied from six runs down to beat the Mets 9-8 in 10 innings. De La Rosa searching for his career-high 17th victory lasted just two innings before the lefty was pulled because of a bruised thumb that has bothered him since June.
